🐚 D Y E S E B E L 🐚

I wanted to do at least one new drawing for this year’s MerMay, and this is a character that I’ve been meaning to draw my own spin on for a couple of MerMays now, but have kept missing the chance to, or just haven’t been inspired. This is my take on Dyesebel, a prominent mermaid character in the Philippines. She originally made her debut in comics, created by Mars Ravelo, and has since been translated into various screen adaptations. Her story varies in the adaptations, but pretty consistent elements through them all are that she has at least one human parent, and when she grows up, she falls in love with a human boy named Fredo. She’s usually having to conceal her mermaid identity and runs into trouble when she’s discovered and becomes a circus attraction. It depends on the adaptation whether she gets a happy ending. For my design, I stuck to her red orange tail, which has become the most popular look for her on screen. I lifted the shell and pearl hair decorations from the 2008 telenovela, and the tail design was me having fun trying to make her distinct from previous versions.

Princess Pardijn!

So by now you probably already know that I like Pardoes a lot but DID YOU KNOW that I also like Pardijn a lot. I love her design, she's a pretty princess while simultaneously keeping the exact same proportions and funky stylised features her wizard jester counterpart does, but still having a few unique tiny touches to her face. She doesn't fall into the stereotype of 'female character must be more humanised to fit beauty standards, that or she's a carbon copy of the male but with lipstick, eyelashes and a bow on her head'. They actually look like individuals of the same species. She's her own character, she's got a jester hat and a princess dress, and I love her for it.

Ahhh this was so much fun to work on! You know I'm enjoying an artwork's vibe when it has a detailed background AND full shading! There's also a few tiny Easter Eggs amongst the books! Also yes I very much have a new favourite character to add to my list, prepare to see more of this funky fellow! I always end up gravitating towards the nichest of characters I swear LOL
