Can you believe the 입춘(Lichun, 立春), which is a super traditional chinese solar calendar dividing up the year in 24 changes in weather, and according to it, spring has already sprung! (Around 2/3-2/4) The calendar is also v popular in Korea culturally too and we often celebrate it with seasonal food.

So for this 입춘/Lichun, I drew 🍲달래 된장찌개 (wild chive dwenjang stew) & 봄동 비빔밥🥬🍚🥄 (korean spring cabbage bibimbap) - which is the ULTIMATE COMBO FOR REFRESHING & SAVORY & SPICY MEAL to kick start spring veggies growing again 😌✨ Hoping @hmartofficial in NYC will carry 봄동 soon….🫶

I'd say, you are doing great, keep at it! I struggle with it constantly too. I'd suggest to include real life references in your thumbnail sketching exercise. Drawing real life models, nature, and scenery at real time can inspire a lot more original compositions than you can imagine. After all, nature/life inspires art!

I recently suggested an art student to try to develop her own inspirations & style by taking more photos of anything that inspires her in her day to day life and using that to reference her artwork because I think that using other famous artist's work is, in a way, derivative. It's only good for referencing and practicing, but not for creating my own vision / taste.

For me, it also helps me to think of the meaning and the storytelling behind the illustration when thinking of a fitting composition. Thinking of what I'm trying to say through this artwork and figure out what kind of composition would best tell this message.

As for interpreting a prompt in my style - it helps to really, really hone in on what you like - the so called "aesthetic". Whether it's color palette, composition, music, fashion, political views, weather, religious motifs, historical references, stories, culture, etc...the list can go on.

All the specific details that make you as a person / artist help shape your artwork. The more you know about yourself & the more honest you are about what you like, the stronger your style or dialect will become!

For example, I love love love dissection compositions where you can see the inside of something in a very graphic way. The first image that stuck with me was a spread from an old children's book called "In My Dreams I can Fly" illustrated by Kathi Bhend. After that I've always drawn and re-drawn and experimented with compositions similar to it.

I also love very flat & organic style of paper collage that I try to emulate using digital programs.

I love center composition because of the strength and simplicity it has (I love Wes Anderson films for this reason).

I also love bugs and their biological designs & funny shapes.

I also love root vegetables and how they look under the earth!

All these kinds of interests went directly into one of the Google Chrome wallpaper. Luckily, this specific project was very free, so I could really delve into making illustrations that I'm drawn to naturally!
