“Oh, then you’ll be able to tell him that I meant no disrespect in coming here,” Wen Xun wears a sheepish smile on his face, but as soon as the stranger comes out into the light he feels as if his whole world stops.
He has to hold his hand to his chest to make sure his heart is still beating.
Why does it feel like that name means something important?
“It’s- good to meet you, Xue Yang,” he finally finds his words, even though his brain is racing and stalling all at once. Ah, his eyes changed- do I smell weird?“You’re quite a bit more imposing up close.”
“I generally have that effect on people.” He grinned crookedly, automatically sweeping his tongue over his fangs as he circled Xun. Not just soothing now, he smelled delightful. “And I’m sure he knows you mean no disrespect.” He pauses in his circling when he comes back around to face him. “Though you still haven’t said what you’re doing here?”
“You want to look like a demon of sorts?” He chuckles. “Or more like a being from the heavens… I think that would look very good. Very intriguing, not very subtle though.”
His cheeks turn darker as he realizes Xue Yang is right. Slowly, he lets go. “You’re right, I should sleep. I’m sorry if I distracted you!”
Slipping away after a moment, he politely sits on the makeshift bed.
Xue Yang shrugs. “It’s more to see if I can, really.” His hand feels cold without the contact and he places it in his lap, letting the transformation melt away.
“You weren’t distracting me,” he huffs, finding it difficult to turn back to his work. “And you really should just take the bed, I’ll probably be awake all night anyway.”
“I bet you can.” He also misses the contact already, but won’t say so, of course. He shakes his head and takes off his boots, neatly leaving them beside his bag. “No, I like it down here.”
After clearing up his space, he lays down on the blankets and curls up like a cat, feeling warm enough to not need to cover himself yet. He faces the workbench with half-lidded eyes. “Goodnight, Xue Yang. Thank you for letting me stay.”
An amused smile quirks his lips as Xun gets comfortable. “Goodnight,” he whispers back, finally tearing his eyes away and turning back to his work.
He picks up a brush, meaning to write down todays findings, but can’t seem to focus. The weight of Xun’s presence behind him is like a lodestone- he keeps peeking back, and once he seems to be asleep, can’t seem to look away. Why did this strange man draw him in so much? It had to be more than just his scent, soothing and exciting all at once. Xue Yang leans on his workbench, eyes drifting shut as he contemplates.
