my own grandfather's obituary was fucking paywalled because it was originally only in print and then digitized, and the newspaper that ran the original obituary has a paywalled website. my grandfather's obituary is paywalled. he died when i was a toddler. i don't know where he was is buried. and the only record of his obituary is paywalled. like, i know it's a minor thing and i can easily get past this. but damn it feels a bit dystopian, don't you think?

like, the title of the article is his name. and the website's pop-up is telling me that this article is only available to subscribers. why do i have to subscribe? im literally related to him. why can a random person who gives your company 7.99 per month allowed to see my grandfather's obituary, but i'm not?

oh. regular obituaries are free to view. but since he died so long ago, his obituary is not considered an obituary. he died in 2001. i still feel like this is a bit dystopian. like, when will i lose access to my grandmother's obituary, written in 2012? i can download it and archive it and copy and paste it, of course, while i still can -- but why does there have to be a "while i still can"?? she's my grandmother. why would an obituary ever become paywalled?
