DISABLED, UNEMPLOYED, ISOLATED, PTSD SURVIVOR
UPDATE ON HOUSING SITUATION #3
I walked my ass to Classic Storage Detroit and rented me a 5 by 10 unit for three months totaling up to $131. It was $65 per month, third month only being $1. I have the rights to unit #1587 until July 17th. That left me with a total of $89 in my bank account. Moving my items in there is what's going to be expensive. Affordable Muscle Movers said they'll send a truck and two movers for three hours for $500. I asked if it would be less if I only get one mover, and they said they don't send single movers and that I would need to book them a week in advance. sighs. That's an additional $411 I ought to obtain somehow to get my things in there.
I'm reaching out to the Ruth Ellis Center to ask about the Kelly Stough Project. My therapist urged me to call them today, but I decided to go to the storage facility instead. I woke up just in time for therapy and then I was out the door. I returned just in time to start getting quotes from "movers near me". The situation I was put in between April 7th to the 11th, between living as a 'houseboy' for a man who ultimately wanted an affectionate companion, and then ending up at a men's shelter from waking up one day to seeing how my housing security can depend on the mood of one oppressive man. The fact that I only moved in with that man because he was the only one that replied to my emails. And the sole reason I was desperately seeking a place on Craigslist was because my previous landowner had discovered I was subleasing from one of his tenants and threatened to not renew his lease this upcoming month if I remain here. I do not have family nor friends in Detroit.
All I've done is work from home since I landed here in August of 2019 so I never had the chance to make connections before the lockdowns started.
I am now unemployed and disabled. I was diagnosed with PTSD in the Summer of 2020 after falling victim to several instances of vi*lence in my life, the latest of which had been by my partner.
I was working from home and managing somehow, but I lost any progress I had made on regards to my mental health in the Summer of 2021 when I was stocked in my own home by my next door neighbor James Hart. He would spy on me through my windows, he would describe to what he'd seen me doing, he would call me a "video game-playing mast*rbator", he would call me a "fat fa*got dork", he would say lewd things through my own back door or front door, he would slam at my doors or windows in the middle of the night, he was terrorizing me for months and getting away with it. My landowner refused to get involved for a long time because she thought she had nothing to do with it. She knew that James Hart was extraverted and mentally ill, so she would make it seem like I was being intolerable of his eccentricities.
This all culminated in the late September of 2021 when this man broke into the building after having surrendered the apartment next to mine. He was arrested that day, he left in cuffs, and that was that, but that was not the end of things for me. I already could not sleep by then and had already lost my at-home job because him living next to me had become a liability. I had to excuse myself out of a Zoom meeting to call the police more than once, and my work performance had already plummeted.
To this day, April 18th, of 2023, I cannot sleep without night sweats, or without night terrors. I have to change my clothes a ton of times, so I just don't sleep sometimes. Or sometimes, I just sleep in my wet clothes and wake up congested, and disturbed from the nightmares, and more tired than I was when I got in bed. This is the reason why I haven't been able to get anything done. When I can't sleep for many nights and feeling tired enough to pass out but knowing what's going to happen as soon as I go unconscious. I never recovered from losing my job in 2021.
The first time I missed a rental payment came way after though. I was still paying rent and my bills out of my savings well until October of 2022. I was living kind of in denial that I had become disabled. I was trying hard to get employed again and back to paying my bills like 2020 and 2021 hadn't happened.
My landowner ended up suing me by the end of December of 2022 for three months' rent. She ended dropping charges and waving off the court fees because I agreed to move out. I knew that the unit above mine had multiple empty bedrooms, I had asked if I could sublease. I remember the previous tenant asking if I wanted to move into the unit the summer of 2021. I was only able to to take her up on the offer because the current tenant that lives in unit three still had vacant bedrooms. He said that I could move in and so I was moved in as soon as February ended. I was paying rent with the payout money. I paid for March, but as soon as April rolled around, the landowner saw me in the building and we had a bit of an explosive interaction. The landowner and I reached a mutual agreement where I could evacuate the unit by end of February and I would receive $1000 in payout.
I started my disability process in December of 2022, the application was officially sent in mid February of 2023, but yet, haven't seen a single penny from it. I decided to file with a local firm called The Disability Attorneys of Michigan. They only get paid if your claim gets approved, but you do have to pay them 25% of your check once you do get approved. I do recommend filing through a law firm because they won't take your case unless they are somewhat confident that your claim will be successful. I'm sure there are other firms that do the same, these are just the people I called because I came across one of their ads on YouTube. lol But yeah, they've been very patient with explaining the disability process and are are people that don't seem to be giving false hope, they're very upfront with what to expect. They're the ones that told me that I should also apply for SSI (Supplementary Social Income) which is on behalf of the state and different than SSDI. The attorneys help me with filing for Social Security Disability Insurance, and they refer me over to the SSI people to file for that as well.
I don't know what I'm going to do from now until SSI or my disability claim get approved, but I'm going to have to depend on my ability to monetize online. All I've ever done is online marketing and digital advertising. My last four jobs were at marketing agencies. I know that I've aided people and places monetize online, or to create foot traffic for their events, purchase their products, etc. for causes that I don't personally believe in. I know that I can do the same for me and be a cause that I resonate with my story and that's good enough for me.
