feeling absolutely fucking mentally ill about Pyre again. like the game has so many layers of tragedy to it. like okay, Spoilers Ahead, but the whole conceit of the Rites? this grand but fatally flawed system of carceral justice, created by these larger-than-life figures who believed in the capability of even the worst person to change for the better? this system that, for all its pomp and majesty, was rotten from the start (if you're physically disabled you cannot win your freedom! the fuck!!), that only was exploited further over time until the new society that was made to replace the old and oppressive one became just as corrupt (racially motivated warmongering! throwing people into Forever Prison for being autistic! banning literacy!) and the only thing you can do is tear it all down and start anew with the hope that maybe you won't fuck it up this time? the fact that even if you do everything right, even if you pull out all the stops and become the best damn conductor that the Rites have ever seen, you cannot save everyone?
