Midterm Meal
The idea:
I have one idea that we could play with I think. I was thinking we could serve something simple like a salad. We can bring in a bunch of different vegetables (everything a different colour) and supply people with a small deck of cards and a pair of dice. Each card could be a different colour (that corresponds to a vegetable) and it could have a command written on it, like "chop", "dice" or "slice." Either somebody deals out the cards, or the team takes the first 5 or 6 they see (we can provide them an exact amount) and they start playing. Pick up a card, roll the dice to see how many of the corresponding vegetable you need and act out the command. This way at the end of the game each group's salad would be completely different because they were dealt different cards and rolled different quantities.

We brainstormed ideas together after Véronique had read part of the Fluxus Workbook and it evolved towards this iteration. We bought the paper together and split the shopping list in half. Tristan too care of preparing the cards.
Chess mapping exercise
For this exercise, we decided to map chess piece to objects that we could pack in our bags (e.g. paws were represented by pens.) The moves themselves were mapped to actions. If you wanted to move a piece to D4, you had to jump 4 times and to do 4 squats, and only then you could move the piece forward on the table.
Overall, it wasn't easy to remember which object we wanted to move and it's overall position once moved. Our mapping also turned out to be a very good workout session. If we had to repeat this experience, we would practice the choreography in advance to allow more fluidity in our movements.

In "Into the Belly of the Image: Historical Aspects of Virtual Reality," Grau argues that virtual reality is a phenomenon that exists since Antiquity and that the intensity of the illusion depends on how intimately the interface clings to the senses of the viewers.
Definition of virtual reality (VR)
The idea of transposing the audience into an enclosed, illusionary visual space. As a consequence of that definition, VR can happen in different contexts. This affirmation is supported by examples from art history.

Casa dei Misteri at Pompeii (60 BC) is decorated with beautiful frescos that represent a Dionysian ritual. This room becomes an illusionary space made of life-sized realistic figures because they seem to move in our reality. This place can be seen as a portal for the Gods to visit our reality and for the humans to enter in the image. The audience creates strong emotional links with these images because of their visual qualities.

Sala delle Prospettive was created by Bladassare Peruzzi for the nouveau riche Agonstino Chigi. The walls in this room have been adorned with fresco of a columned hall and Roman countryside. The artwork was so detailed that it created the illusion of a virtual space beyond the room. By facing the wall from the right perspective, Peruzzi created the illusion that you were standing in an open-air terrace looking over the countryside. This piece was so successful that some said they were unwilling to believe that it was in fact a painting.
VR in public sphere / politically suggestive power
Panoramas were invented by Robert Barker in 1787.
The first picture was painted in water-colour on a complete circle twenty-five feet in diameter, on a surface of paper pasted on canvas, and the work was carried out in the guard-room of the palace of Holyrood. (Wikisource)
Perspective drawing was used in military reconnaissance. Observing and knowing topological details made it easier to come with tactical plans in wars.
Inside a panorama, the audience is surrounded by 3D images lighted from behind. The audience has the impression to be travel through time and space.
Panoramas were used as propaganda tool because they were able to create good realistic reproduction of military campaigns and battles. People experienced them as an artificial reality rather than as a singular image. The aim of panoramas such as the one reproducing the Battle of Sedan was to implant this scene into the collective memory.
Technological Aspects of VR
Virtual reality exists to create illusions for the senses in a way that make a more total immersion for the onlooker. Virtual reality “appeals to all senses and occupies physiological space as immediately and imperceptibly as possible.” If perceived actions equals probable phenomena, then what is seen is taken for real. Stereoscopy is a technique used to create the illusion of depth from a pair of 2 dimensional images. A form of stereoscopy is to present the viewer with a pair of offset images. The brain then combines these two images, suggesting the perception of depth.
Stereoscopic TV
Stereoscopic television was first demonstrated in 1928 and it is still the most popular method of recording and displaying 3D video today. 3D video is created by filming with two cameras side by side, mimicking the distance between a person's pupils. Steroscopic television often uses Anaglyph 3D to display the 3D image. Anaglyph 3D is "a composite picture printed in two colors that produces a three-dimensional image when viewed through glasses having lenses of corresponding colors (Reference.com)." Usually these colours are red and blue.

Various devices such as head-mounted display, dataglove, and vest can be worn by a user and allow him or her to enter an interactive and dynamic image.
Contemporary examples
Osmose, virtual reality installation by Char Davies/Softimages, 1995.
Osmose uses a Head Mounted Display to immerse the user into a 3D simulation of nature and text spaces. This project is particularly interesting because participants navigate through the 3D space by breathing. By wearing a rubber vest the players are able to navigate the virtual spaces in a way that a diver might. You inhale to rise and exhale to fall.
A-Volve, interactive real-time installation by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, 1994-95.
Participants were able to create virtual characters and to interact with them through a simple and intuitive interface. After sketching creatures on a touch-screen, they were displayed inside a water-filled tank. Participants could directly influence the evolution of creatures by stroking the water. The interaction between artificial life and the participants create the unexpected and encourage reactions from the user. Therefore, the overall evolution of the artwork depends upon the users rather than on the artists.
It's difficult for participants to differentiate what is real from what is artificial when they are actively involved in a virtual reality experience.
Conclusions
A live picture is experienced in a better way when the interface is more real and more natural. With the power of computer, we can fake the reality in a way that it seems more and more exactly like the real life, thus allowing for psychological manipulation.
The notion of distance is crucial. Too much distance weaken the psychological link between the artwork and the onlooker. Too little distance makes it impossible for the subject to experience the artwork as a subject.

Random thoughts DB4
I'm really happy to have met with Jason yesterday, since it really sparked again my creativity for the final project.
The main critic of my prototype was that it needs a second level of actions and reading to be really good and fun.
Couples ideas so far : the ball could become drunk, edgy or sick. Though my favorite of the three is to make the ball sick, because I see a link between that and the particles that are often used to reproduce phenomenons.
A sick ball could show a degradation of the speech, e.g. it could replace some letters to emulate someone who habe a cold. It could potentially add noise (cough, sneeze) to the message and so on.
Visually, I need to improve the over all look. I am heading towards playing with the amount of particles because the message becomes harder to read with less particles. I'm also thinking to play with the size and colors of my particles system. And I will pay attention to the font.
I also need to force the user to enter their name (shouldn't be too hard to do) and could use that to personalize the message at some point. Lastly, I will give a try to the random sequencer to make things more fun again. [[I do understand how it works, I was able to explain it to my mom... who is not a programmer!]]
That's it for now. Need to go back to working on final projects.

The Ultracrepidarian Eight Ball
For this project, I would like to create a digital magic eight ball. This applet built in Processing would react to questions typed by a user. It would then display its programmed answer to that string of text.
I believe that the particles effect could be meaningful to represent magic that comes out of the ball. The particles will jiggle on the screen, to give the impression that life is coming out of the ball.
Rather than using the original sayings of the popular toy, I would replace it with my own sentences. The major difference with the original magic eight ball and the version I propose to create would come from these sayings. I would like to mix humoristic sentences with more serious thoughts.
My eight ball has three distinct personalities. The first one is obsessed by food, the second is mean and sarcastic and the last one is crazy and smart at the same time. The answers are randomly selected from a pool of sentences. The length of the question influences the length of the reply.

DB4 - Draft project proposal + sketches
The Ultracrepidarian Eight Ball

I would also attempt again to implement a jiggle effect to give the impression that life is coming out of the ball.

I would also like to play on the degradation of speech through mispronunciation. After asking few questions, answers would start to be less grammatically correct.

Water Type by Mr.doob is a chrome experiment that uses html5 canvas to reproduce the behavior of water. Clicking with the mouse allow you to disrupt the water, as if you were throwing a rock on its surface. You can create ripples in the water when you hit enter after having typed text. However, it could look better aesthetically in order to get away from the pixel materiality. I appreciated the animation on words as they enter into the water because it is creating believable waves. It is worth trying to fill the screen with any of the following: ( ) o c v w @.
Story Problem by Erik Loyer is an instrument that allow user to perform a poem. The narration is a strong element of this piece, and the user doesn’t have a lot of freedom when it comes to performing this poem. Time becomes a key input here, and the mouse is used to unfold words and images.The strongest element of this piece is related to its choreography, since the mouse position has an effect on melody, rhythm, volume, size, motion and color. However, it could be a lot more fun if the exact movement of the mouse could shape the words differently.
In both case, I would have loved to be able to interact more with the pieces. While the first example is lacking of interesting mouse input, the second one is critically lacking of keyboard input. The strength of Story Problem is to create a pace and atmosphere around text, while the strength of Water Type is to swallow up characters in a motion that reminds me of what you can observe when you throw a rock in a lake. Since Water Type is largely based on user-inputed text, it’s hard to decipher a true semantic embedded in its design.

I designed a behavior for text that can break it into hundreds of particles. A user can interact with that system by using their mouse to send away particles and their keyboard to bring them back towards the center of the stage where they form the text again. This program plays on the notion of deformation that happens through the explosion of a word cast on the screen.

This interactive behavior for text has the ability to break the link between molecules that form text. It can deconstruct speech into tiny elements that are flying out and are becoming hard to catch. It is a visual representation of fragility, but it also expresses that notion of change that can modify a given situation and prevent it from going back to its starting state.
Particles are useful to represent natural phenomenons. By using particles to draw text, a visual representation of human speech, it reminds us that we are subjected to things that are greater than us.
Example of it being used in a meaningful way:
I can envision this kind of behavior being used as sub-text to critique some aspect of the society. For instance, it could be used to express disagreement with some policies of the government or to show that something, in appearances solid, is full of flaws.
How it works?
This piece was entirely designed with Processing. It uses Andale Mono in 80pt.White text is being drawn to a buffer screen. Then particles are being drawn on-top of that text, based on the brightness of the buffered image. The particle class has the following properties: origin, location, size, color and velocity. It has methods to display a particle, to make it move and to reverse its direction. These different properties allowed me to attribute a different identity to each particles (mostly, a different velocity, that prevented the text to move in a block.)

About the choreography:
The user arrives to a screen of moving particles. They bounces back when they touch the edges of the screen. The user can disrupt that movement with the mouse. The position of the mouse is used as a target for the particles. Upon click, particles go back to the center of the stage and form a word. Particles can be freed from the word they are forming by mousing over them. At any time, the user has the possibility to free the particles or to constrain them again to their original position within a word. It’s also possible for the user to erase the word on the screen and to replace it with the text of their choice.

The idea of progression was very important to me throughout the development of this piece. At first, a given user is passively contemplating the particles moving. Then, that user can disrupt the system and operate changes to make it comply to their own desire, wether it is to free all the particles from their anchor to the text, or to replace the given text with their own word(s).

When I started extending my work done for 3.2, I already had solved how to save text into a buffer screen and how to use it to draw a particle system on top of it. The development of 3.3. was influenced by the pre-critic we did in class last week. I tried to address all the issues that were mentioned to me, and to make it fun for the user at the same time. For more details about the code behind this applet, refer to the comments that accompany it.
Added a behavior that sets the moving mouse as target and attracts the particles close to it. This was a major development phase and it gave me interesting results. (See images below)
Added the possibility to type your own text to the screen, which kills the current particles system and replace it with a new one.
At this point, I decided to hold a quick beta-test with some friends and to ask them to provide feedback for me. They pointed a few issues to me that I addressed as following:
Added event listener for backspace, that allows user to erase text on the stage.
Fixed bug a with the top boundary of the canvas.
Enlarged the canvas.
Added color.
Changed the text displayed on screen for Apodyopsis, which means the act of mentally undressing someone.

DB 3 ideas and sketch
After pondering for a while, I came up with different ideas for the upcoming design brief.
One of them would be to work with a broken or shattered type behavior. (See inspiration1 and inspiration2.) I like the angular and sharp feeling from these examples.
I started to explore Processing.js since I already have some knowledge of Processing. It seems fairly simple to use, but you can't combine it with libraries. What's could be interesting though is that I could pair this with some API, RSS Feed, etc. I did a very quick test in Processing to see how I could use @font-face in a Processing.js sketch. (See it here.) That sketch is using the previous and current mouse position to change the opacity of the text. I did not push this experiment further because I'm not sure it has a lot of potential. (Useful reference.)
I then decided to try NextText. And I had some problems with the built that I downloaded from the class website. When I was trying to run the code from the tutorial, it was throwing an error at me. After wasting time trying to debug it, I tried the same code with a freshly downloaded copy of the library on another computer. The code was working. After re-installing the library on my macbook, it worked there too, yay!
NextText seems really interesting, but it's somewhat hard to decipher how it works from the documentation. In order to really produce something with that library, I would need to spend a lot more time than I did so far and to have a clearer idea of what I want to build. Since I was running out of time, I did not explore that road further so far.
Some ideas/concepts that interests me so far include particles (I have always liked them), stretching letters, playing around the idea of zoom to hide text within text. Also, I am fairly sure that I want to use mouse input to influence text.

Reading Response: "Type" in Creative Code
In "Type", Maeda argues that because type has the ability to bridge between abstraction and representation, it acquires more meaning that other visual elements. Because of that role, type can create elements of surprise within communication.
This chapter exemplifies different approaches used by students to push the limits of typography. Some of the examples are interactive and unveiled different results depending on the actions taken by users. Other examples demonstrate typeface designed to address specific questions or issues. However, all these artworks add a new layer of meaning on top of the letterform. By rethinking typography, a gap between traditional print and screen text is being created. It seems like the traditional way of laying out letterform is not as rich as type that can be created for the screen. Therefore, interactive and dynamic type on a screen has a greater potential to carry different layers on meaning on top of what it represents. Language is entering in a brand new dimension that could revolution the experience of users.
Reading Response: Post PostScript please
In Post PostScript please, Lewis and Nadeau are presenting different experimentations that have been done to push away the inherent limits of PostScript formats. Their proposal to definitely get away from these limitations is to develop flexible types of fonts called ComplexType. With ComplexType, it would be possible to apply changes to the letterform itself and to define them over time.
According to the authors, even text created for the screen is trapped in the traditional print bias. The full potential of new medias is not used to create an experience of dynamic text.
ComplexType could become a way for typography to shift from an ocular centric paradigm resulting from the invention of the printing press to a more audile and tactile model. For artists and users, it would enable a more interactive experience. The act of reading would become much more than a linear action.
It is interesting to reflect on how the meaning of text can be interpreted, supplement or subvert when it gets away from the traditional print rules. The very action of transforming text over time on the screen can lead to more diverse interpretation that just following along a sentence on a printed page. It opens a whole new world of possibilities and experimentations that could influence the creative process of writers and artists.
