grenouille was born in the backstreets of district fifteen, a place known to be the stinkiest place in the city and also a huge trading hub. almost immediately after he was born, his mother was taken for a past crime she committed, so he was taken to be raised by wet nurses but was then taken to an orphanage that was a part of a church. he was born without a scent (he smells like absolutely nothing) and because of this has been shunned and worried about by many people and even led some of them to going mad. he is then sold to a tanner named grimal, who then sells him to a perfumer named giuseppe baldini. at some point, he finds a girl who's natural scent is sea breeze, water lilies and apricot blossoms. finding her scent irresistible, he kills her and stays with her body until her scent is gone. this then influences him to find a way to preserve human scent. baldini, the perfumer that grenouille is sold to, used to be successful but useless, relying on the talent of other perfumers. his shop is on a bridge. he was starting to lose business, but as he requested grenouille to recreate the scents of other perfumers, the boy makes them better, so he gets a lot of business again. he was then the official apprentice of baldini, replacing his former apprentice, chΓ©nier. a little bit later, grenouille receives his journeyman papers. he then leaves the backstreets, and the bridge that baldini's shop was on collapsed, so the man died that same night. he went to the nest, but after spending around a year there left to live in the middle of nowhere, having gotten tired of the scent of humanity. he lived in isolation for seven years before coming back. he then finds another girl named laure richis, who smells really nice, which influences him to kill other young, virgin women. he killed twenty-three women before going to laure as his final victim. however, she's able to escape and shares what he did, which sends him to prison for an indefinite amount of time. however, he gets out when vergilius finds him and invites him to join limbus company as the fourteenth sinner. no one knows where the remains of the twenty-three women are except grenouille (they're already preserved). he hopes to get the opportunity to kill laure and finish what he started (it's going to happen in his canto). he's going to turn the girls into "the ultimate perfume".
