College just isn’t for everyone
Hello! your local team skull grunt, xanarchy gang member, and future college drop out Trinity here. Yes, you read that right, future college drop out. After my spring term is over, I will be dropping out of college. It’s not a hard decision for me at all. I’ve been genuinely wanting to drop out since October or November of last year, aka during my first term ever. This is basically a post describing my situation of why I’m dropping out without going into too much detail.
To say I struggled in High School, would be an understatement. I graduated a year late and almost graduated two years late simply because of needing 4 years of gym credit which I simply did not have, and would have to go to high school for another year just for gym class. I was one of the students who hated school, more than anyone else, and to make it even more difficult, if I did not like a teacher or a class, I wouldn’t do shit for them. I’m still in that mindset, to be honest. I’m not doing shit for two of my classes as we speak because I can’t stand the classes.
In fact, I was almost a high school drop out too, but if my teachers, guidance counselor, and mom didn’t push me and feed me the lie of having to be 18 in order to drop out of high school, I wouldn’t have walked the stage and received my diploma almost two years ago.
Please note; From personal experience, if you have struggled with high school like I did, you probably won’t make it in college either. I hate to be a downer, but its the truth. I know everyone’s different, but its just a huge possibility that you won’t make it.
Anyways, on to the main reason of this post, Why I’m dropping out. Now, the reason is gonna be under a read more due to it containing triggering subjects such as an eating disorder, self harm, and suicide.
Professor, for an hour: if you think about it we’re all in different realities….no one usually experiences the same thing and if I were to say ‘dog’ just about all of you would think of a different breed
All of us:
hi! i’m looking for more mutuals on here & on ig so? reblog this post & follow me & i’ll check you out! or just follow me on insta :*
I have no motivation to study what do?
I CAN RELATE SO HARD ANON, I FEEL YOU
im not amazing at advice (especially when it comes to motivation bc i lacK IT SO MUCH), but a few small pointers that could possibly help,,:
try to picture where you want to be and why you want to be there! for example, i tend to get sudden bursts of motivation like ,, ‘FRICK YEAH IM GONNA MAKE FILMS AND IM GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD WITH THEM AND ITS GONNA BE SICK’
REMIND YOURSELF THAT GETTING THERE IS A PROCESS AND YOU NEED TO START THE PROCESS N OW ; if i want to make films, i need to go to uni. if i want to go to uni, i need to pass my a levels. if i want to pass my a levels, I NEED TO GET MY ASS IN GEAR AND DO THIS WORK R IGHT N O W
remind yourself of the depressing consequences of NOT doing the work - if you don’t get it done, your teacher might be mad and youll have to sit n listen to them have a go at you. you might not pass in the end. its not the happiest motivation method, but it can be a wake-up call
EXAM COUNTDOWNS ,,, I hate counting down to exams so much but again, if you study something with exams, it can be a huge wake-up call. sometimes you need to rely on panic to get your ass moving, yknow? the other day i realised i have 4 weeks until exams and i neeeeed to get my ass into action
this was really short and basic because i wanted to give you an immediate answer and also im crap at motivation but i hope it helped a little! feel free to send more asks and messages if you need more detail and ill try my best to help out as much as i can!! good luck, anon!!

Ok so this post is extremely long and I put it all together for my blogs Feeling sad page but as I don’t have a huge amount of followers I realize so many people are not seeing this information so I’m posting it here too!
alternatives without harming yourself:
holding/squeezing ice.
splashing your face with water.
getting a rubber band and snapping it against your skin (this could hurt, though it’s better than other ways that people usually choose to self-harm).
take a hot shower or bath.
eat something sour. it will take your mind of the urge. (lemon, sour lollies)
massage where you want to self-harm.
get a red pen or red paint and draw/paint over where you usually self-harm.
remind yourself as to why you shouldn’t do it. (scars, harms organs, leave memories etc…)
describe what you are feeling. (is the urge/pain in your chest, fists, legs, arms, head).
killing yourself will not help. it is not a solution.
you have your whole life ahead of you. you have so many more years that you can accomplish things in. for example;
having a family.
getting married.
to watch the sun rise.
to watch the sun set.
to save someone else’s life.
finish school.
get your dream job.
to laugh.
to smile.
to go camping.
travel to new places.
to wake up every morning to the person you love.
friends.
family.
to keep that promise you made.
to accomplish a goal.
to meet your idol.
to listen to new music.
theme parks.
video games.
chocolate.
to be able to look back and say “i made it”.
what you’re going through is temporary.
in case you need to hear this:
you are loved.
you are wanted.
you are needed.
you are beautiful.
you are handsome.
you are important.
you are not alone.
you are okay.
you are strong.
you are worth it.
you are smart.
you are not a failure.
you are useful.
you are going to be okay.

for those who might need it
teachers that roast the people you hate are the backbone of our society
me: huh damn i’m bored
the 2% of my brain that isn’t actively sabotaging me: do your assignments. read a book. take a fucking shower
me:
3 websites/apps that every student needs.
Today’s post is all about websites that I use in my daily school routine for essays or generally for homework that might make your life a lot easier too.Let’s on to it.
• Photomath: Photomath is actually an app where you can take a photo of a math equation and it can solve it for you BUT unlike some other apps that give straight up the answer it gives you the details of the solving procedure.I know that some of you might think that this is actually not good and I know that we’re supposed to do all the homework by ourselves but I sometimes use it when I’m just not in the mood to do Maths but still need to get all my school work done for the next day.
• Hemingway: So this a site that I’ve been really using lately when it comes to double-checking and correcting essays.I really like Word don’t get me wrong but after I finish a big essay I always make mistakes (e.x. some words might not be correctly written or might not “fit”) so I copy and paste the whole article or whatever it is there and it highlights the mistakes or anything that is not correctly done in my work.
• IXL: This is a website for maths practice problems that I told you in my previous post. There’s not much to explain, it provides you with all kinds of exercises for whatever you need and at least for me it has done wonders.

You Are Going To Have So Much Success In 2018 (pass it on)
I nearly scrolled past, but I got nervous
2018
- wake up with your alarm. don’t lie there for another half an hour. seize the day
- have a glass of water as soon as you wake up and before you go to sleep. hydrate
- stretch. do some yoga. try and do the splits or even just touch your toes. relax and meditate and focus on your breathing
- even if you’re not going out, change your clothes and your underwear. clean is always better
- go for run. or a walk. or to the gym. even just once a week. just get outside
- read a little everyday. maybe for leisure or maybe for class. just learn
- new music is always lush. spotify, apple music, a live gig. go hear someone’s heart
- cut things out that make you unhappy. people, relationships, certain foods, habits, anything
- study hard. work hard. get it. the job, the degree, the relationship. just do it for you
- check your boobs everyday. make doctors appointments
- eat a piece of fruit and veg everyday. we all know 5 a day is far fetched, especially for students
- compliment people. you never know how much someone needs to hear something positive
- compliment yourself. look at yourself in the mirror and say five things you like and maybe one to improve. you can always better yourself but don’t make that your be all and end all
- a relationship should never be your everything. it’s lush to be smitten and to have someone smitten with you but be sure not to become half a person. you are a whole. reclaim your independence. learn to love your solitude
- don’t forget your friends. keep in touch with people. don’t be glued to your phone but make sure you stay in contact
- give yourself time to heal. grief is a weird thing and time isn’t always the healer. you’ll have good days and bad days and you should never feel bad for crying. it’s not over and you don’t have to move on in the way people think you should. memories are good things
- don’t put so much pressure on yourself. eat that pizza. buy that charity shop coat. there’ll always be money and there’s always tomorrow to eat a salad. calm down
- stress is the silent killer. you don’t need that first degree or that promotion. do your best and you’ll be rewarded
- say fuck it once in a while. or a lot. a couple of g&ts, a party, a new outfit
- have sex or don’t have sex. it’s a lot of fun when your needs are met and you’re enjoying yourself with someone you love or just like the look of
- withdraw consent if you get uncomfortable. at the beginning, middle, end, it’s always okay. don’t let social expectations dictate your choices. the idea of being a slut doesn’t exist unless you’re hurting someone you’ve made monogamous promises to. other than that you’re good
- get checked and be good to your body. sex is great if your mind and body are good with it too
- take photos. paint. write in a journal. document your life. you never know when you’ll need some nostalgia or a creative outlet
- families aren’t perfect but they’ll always be in your life in some way. in person or in your heart and memory. try to make them good memories. there are those without parents and siblings and grandparents who would give anything to have what you have. try a little. take the higher ground
- mental health is important. cut out anything that could contribute to its downfall. your mind’s long life is more important than temporary fixes
- listen to the people close to you. most of the time they have your best interests at heart and they’re trying to help you see what maybe you can’t. don’t take things so personally
- we’re living in a time of hate. be a ray of sunshine to this dark world. don’t seclude yourself to your own cave. that isn’t what self love is. we need to take care of ourselves first, yes, but remember to love each other too
- take one day at a time
*curtsies* So, I really, REALLY don't want to offend anyone, Duke, but a question has been bothering me for a really long time and I was afraid to ask it because I didn't want to piss off anyone and since you're really eloquent and knowledgeable, I thought I'd ask you. So here it goes: you always say that arts and sciences are equally important, but how can analysing Chaucer or ecopoetics or anything similar compare to biomedicine or engineering in improving human lives? I'm genuinely curious!
*Curtsies* All right. Let me tell you a story:
When I lived in London, I shared a flat with a guy who was 26 years old, getting his PhD in theoretical physics. Let’s call him Ron. Ron could not for the life of him figure out why I was wasting my time with an MA in Shakespeare studies or why my chosen method of providing for myself was writing fiction. Furthermore, it was utterly beyond him why I should take offense to someone whose field literally has the word “theoretical” in the title ridiculing the practical inefficacy of art. My pointing out that he spent his free time listening to music, watching television, and sketching famous sculptures in his notebook somehow didn’t convince him that art is a necessary part of a healthy human existence.
Three other things that happened with Ron:
I came home late one night and he asked where I’d been. When I told him I’d been at a friend’s flat for a Hanukkah celebration, he said, “What’s Hanukkah?” I thought he was joking. He was not.
A few weeks later, I came downstairs holding a book. He asked what I was reading and when I said, “John Keats,” he (and the three other science grad students in the room) did not know who that was. This would be like me not knowing who Thomas Edison is.
One night we got into an argument about the issue of gay marriage, and at one point he actually said, “It doesn’t affect me so I don’t see why I should care about it.”
Now: If Ron had ever read Number the Stars, or heard Ode to a Nightingale, or been to a performance of The Laramie Project, do you think he ever would have asked any of these questions?
Obviously this is an extreme example. This guy was amazingly ignorant, but he was also the walking embodiment of the questions you’re asking. What does art matter compared with something like science, that saves people’s lives? Here’s the thing: There’s a flaw in the question, because art saves lives, too. Maybe not in the same “Eureka, we’ve cured cancer!” kind of way, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Sometimes the impact of art is relatively small, even invisible to the naked eye. For example: as a young teenager I was (no exaggeration) suicidally unhappy. Learning to write is what kept me (literally and figuratively) off the ledge. But I was one nameless teenager; in the greater scheme of things, who cares? Fair enough. Let’s talk big picture. Let’s talk about George Orwell. George Orwell wrote books, the two most famous of which are Animal Farm and 1984. You probably read at least one of those in high school. Why do these books matter? Because they’re cautionary tales about limiting the power of oppressive governments, and their influence is so pervasive that the term “Big Brother,” which refers to the omniscient government agency which watches its citizens’ every move in 1984, has become common parlance to refer to any abuse of power and invasion of privacy by a governmental body. Another interesting fact, and the reason I chose this example: sales of 1984 fucking skyrocketed in 2017, Donald Trump’s first year in office. Why? Well, people are terrified. People are re-reading that cautionary tale, looking for the warning signs.
Art, as Shakespeare taught us, “holds a mirror up to nature.” Art is a form of self-examination. Art forces us to confront our own mortality. (Consider Hamlet. Consider Dylan Thomas.) Art forces us to confront inequality. (Consider Oliver Twist. Consider Audre Lorde. Consider A Raisin in the Sun. Consider Greta Gerwig getting snubbed at the Golden Globes.) Art forces us to confront our own power structures. (Consider Fahrenheit 451. Consider “We Shall Overcome.” Consider All the President’s Men. Consider “Cat Person.”) Art reminds us of our own history, and keeps us from repeating the same tragic mistakes. (Consider The Things They Carried. Consider Schindler’s List. Consider Hamilton.) Art forces us to make sense of ourselves. (Consider Fun House. Consider Growing Up Absurd.) Art forces us to stop and ask not just whether we can do something but whether we should. (Consider Brave New World. Consider Cat’s Cradle.) You’re curious about ecopoetics? The whole point is to call attention to human impact on the environment. Some of our scientific advances are poisoning our planet, and the ecopoetics of people like the Beats and the popular musicians of the 20th century led to greater environmental awareness and the first Earth Day in 1970 . Art inspires change–political, social, environmental, you name it. Moreover, art encourages empathy. Without books and movies and music, we would all be stumbling around like Ron, completely ignorant of every other culture, every social, political, or historical experience except our own. Since we have such faith in science: science has proved that art makes us better people. Science has proved that people who read fiction not only improve their own mental health but become proportionally more empathetic. (Really. I wrote an article about this when I was working for a health and wellness magazine in 2012.) If you want a more specific example: science has proved that kids who read Harry Potter growing up are less bigoted. (Here’s an article from Scientific American, so you don’t have to take my word for it.) That is a big fucking deal. Increased empathy can make a life-or-death difference for marginalized people.
But the Defense of Arts and Humanities is about more than empirical data, precisely because you can’t quantify it, unlike a scientific experiment. Art is–in my opinion–literally what makes life worth living. What the fuck is the point of being healthier and living longer and doing all those wonderful things science enables us to do if we don’t have Michelangelo’s David or Rimbaud’s poetry or the Taj Mahal or Cirque de Soleil or fucking Jimi Hendrix playing “All Along the Watchtower” to remind us how fucking amazing it is to be alive and to be human despite all the terrible shit in this world? Art doesn’t just “improve human lives.” Art makes human life bearable.
I hope this answers your question.
To it I would like to add: Please remember that just because you don’t see the value in something doesn’t mean it is not valuable. Please remember that the importance of science does not negate or diminish the importance of the arts, despite what every Republican politician would like you to believe. And above all, please remember that artists are every bit as serious about what they do as astronomers and mathematicians and doctors, and what they do is every bit as vital to humanity, if in a different way. Belittling their work by questioning its importance, or relegating it to a category of lesser endeavors because it isn’t going to cure a disease, or even just making jokes about how poor they’re going to be when they graduate is insensitive, ignorant, humiliating, and, yes, offensive. And believe me: they’ve heard it before. They don’t need to hear it again. We know exactly how frivolous and childish and idealistic and unimportant everyone thinks we are. Working in the arts is a constant battle against the prevailing idea that what you do is useless. But it’s bad enough that the government is doing its best to sacrifice all arts and humanities on the altar of STEM–we don’t need to be reminded on a regular basis that ordinary people think our work is a waste of time and money, too.
Artists are exhausted. They’re sick and tired of being made to justify their work and prove the validity of what they do. Nobody else in the world is made to do that the way artists are. That’s why these questions upset them. That’s why it exasperates me. I have to answer some version of this question every goddamn day, and I am so, so tired. But I’ve taken the effort to answer it here, again, in the hopes that maybe a couple fewer people will ask it in the future. But even if you’re not convinced by everything I’ve just said, please try to find some of that empathy, and just keep it to yourself.

writing conclusions in papers is like the stupidest thing ever though like what’s the point of dedicating an entire paragraph to “so yeah i know you just read my paper but this is a summarization of what you read in case you need to be reminded about what you just read” like why can’t the paper just end
I keep seeing this post and similar ones, and if y'all’s teachers and professors have left you with the idea that a conclusion is a summary, they have failed you in a big way.
Your conclusion is your “so what’s the fucking point” section. You’ve given you’re reader a lot of info and now they need to know why they care. Depending on the type of paper you should be giving a plan of action, explaining how this knowledge changes our understanding of the topic, link your paper to other disciplines, suggest further areas of study, etc.
One of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever received is that if you can’t envision yourself dropping the mic and strutting off stage at the end of your conclusion then it’s probably not strong enough.
“So whats the fucking point” is more helpful than all 6 years I’ve probably been writing papers
I blame the 5-paragraph essay formula that we were all forced to follow throughout primary and middle school(and probably high school for some). The whole “restate your thesis” bullshit is how every teacher would explain a conclusion. I prefer to think of an essay as:
Introduction to the subject+background info
Analysis of subject+proof/evidence/studies
Synthesis of analysis and our world/situation
And did I learn to do any of this in an English class? Nope. IB psychology taught me more about writing than any other class I’ve taken. If you want to take a class where you actually learn to write academically, take an IB class(plus IB psych is very interesting on its own).
This post is good, minus the commenter who knows so little about English literature as a discipline that they think it’s the job of English departments to teach people how to write. (That’s not what English departments do.)
Actually though:
conclusion =/= summary conclusion = so what?
