one thing that hardly ever is mentioned in relation to house of leaves but comes up in my mind a lot is the closet that appears between karen and navy's room and the kids' room. it shows up before the door to the labyrinth and connects the space. i think a lot about what it means in the context of the greater narrative of generational trauma and specifically incestuous trauma. it's this encroachment of space between parent and child. a blurring of lines, an overreach of access. fundamentally when trauma is passed down it's like you have this door in your head where your parent can step through and talk/act through you at their leisure. but also having that lessening of privacy. you could accidentally walk in on someone changing. a child could walk in on their parents in an intimate moment. a parent has more access to the kids' room at night when they are more vulnerable. all these things that take the home, the house, the family, a space where you should feel the most safety and comfort, and turn it into a space where you're exploited and invaded. it breeds violence and secrets, the kinds of things you aren't supposed to tell other people about. it shrinks your world, because the other kids at school don't have to worry about the things that haunt you every day. soon there is nothing for you but the house. nowhere else for you to go. and when you grow up and have a house of your own, what are you going to do? the door's in your head now. it'll be an uphill battle to keep it shut.

The problem with being low support needs is that people mentally autocorrect that to “no support needs” and then proceed to give you absolutely nothing and then get surprised when you implode after six months.
