It probably belonged to one of the many visitors, which is why at first she was hesitant to look inside, lest she stain the paper with her grubby fingers, as Tomek called them. But the temptation was too much for her to handle, the book calling out to her from the other side of the room. Unlike other kids at the orphanage, Nina loved spending time in their tiny library, not only because it kept her bullies away - the caretakers were adamant on having the space undisturbed and safe from prying hands - but also as it was a great place to find gems such as this. The book was beautiful, everyone could see it, but it was the contents that enthralled her. The words ‘Fjerdan Glossary’ opened a whole new world for her, Nina was eager to dive into.

He watched, mesmerised, as the man’s hands worked, fluid moves not unlike a current in a river, and asked him to perform the trick again, and again, until the stranger gently pushed him aside when Kaz’s demands grew too much. The memory of his father’s strong embrace as he showed him a magic trick he had learned warmed his cold body when everything else failed. His father laughed, even though the cards flew right off Kaz’s hands, spilling on the table at their modest house. Jordie scoffed, then, but Kaz could see the fond smile he bore. Things were easier, back then. Now, he could do the same trick with his eyes closed and hands bound behind his back, but never again did he feel so accomplished, so warm, as he did in a run-down cabin they called home.

Bruce Wayne is a busy man - managing two identities is hard work, especially if your second persona is Gotham's notorious vigilante. During his day job, Bruce meets a journalist, Clark Kent. Only... something is off about the man, and it maybe has to do with a new superhero in the city, Superman. How will Bruce and Clark's first meeting go? And will them being superheroes make things awkward? or: Bruce and Clark meet - first as capes, and then as civilians. Set after The Batman 2022 and Superman 2025.

The previous night left a dent in his sleep schedule, the thieves he hunted down unexpectedly resilient, forcing him to chase them for ten blocks before they fell into one of his traps. One of them even got a good hit at him, which was why Bruce was now sporting a beautiful black eye, covered with a healthy dose of concealer. His temples pulsed in a way Bruce knew would soon morph into a headache. Alfred had warned him not to go overboard, that his alter-ego had to take it easy so that ‘Bruce Wayne’ could look his best the next day, but the words had been nothing but filler to Bruce’s ears. Now he regretted not listening to the man.

Tim, Jason, and Dick stumble upon some information that leads them to believe Bruce is in a relationship with someone they don't know. Cue shenanigans while the three of them try to piece together all info, and come up with the right answers.

A Sorrow Vine feeds on them, growing stronger the more misery it consumes; often the one who summoned the Vine becomes its first victim - slowly devoured by the plant as it grows stronger and more resilient.” “And… how do we kill it?” As if recognising the word, the plant strengthened its grip, until the vines felt like iron clasps around Charles’ arms. Fighting the urge to flee, he remained still, letting Edwin work. Edwin’s voice came from behind him, and Charles had enough self-preservation left not to force his head to turn, but it was a near thing, “Like I said, Charles, you need to keep calm and stay still.”

Venture into the cold (stay for a moment longer) is a second story I wrote for OwO (Original Work Opportunity) in 2025. The first one, Lure me in with a bird song can be read here.

"Venture..." is a story of a noir detective on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. It's a fragment of a detective story with cyberpunk elements.

On Europa, everyone was equally screwed. With over one billion people cramped inside the ice layer of the tiny moon orbiting Jupiter, and temperatures well below freezing on a good day, living here could hardly be called living. And yet, be it by a miracle or sheer audacity, the ever-growing population persevered. We persevered. Most of us came to Europa looking for work – the Supercomputer Farms accepted anyone, no matter their legal situation, or how many planets wanted them dead, you just had to be stupid enough to hope for a better life here. Some came to hide, and what a great place Europa is for that. The icy labyrinth made of corridors chiselled in the thick ice changed constantly, and without warning. The few who chose to stay despite all that were considered… aberrant. I must shamefully admit, I labelled Miss Thea Nova as one of those aberrants even before she opened her mouth.

Since OWO 2025 (Original Work Opportunity, an exchange for original works) had author reveals, I'm proud to share two (the other one gets its own post) works I wrote this time - Lure me in with a bird song and Venture into the cold (stay for a moment longer).

"Lure..." is a short story of a first meeting set in a semi-regency setting, while "Venture..."'s main character is a noir detective on a distant moon.

Next to him, his mother nudged him, a fan covering her disgruntled expression. "Fredrik, dear, do smile at the guests, lest they think you no better than a wild boar." The comment made him roll his eyes in annoyance. His mother knew, of course, that Fredrik had no desire to be paraded around like a stallion on an auction, and yet she insisted - gently, but sternly - he joined her on the Withers' ball. There was no doubt in his mind, Lady Catherine Holmes had her eyes set firmly on one thing - finding him a proper match. "Thank you, mother, dearest, your words are music to my ears." Fredrik shifted in his place, the wool of his outer layer coming in contact with his skin.

When she looks out of the window of the diner she’s been sitting in for the last hour, Jessica sighs, already feeling resignation settle over her. The kid, Scrappy, as she started to call him in her thoughts, is back again, sitting on the bench overlooking the place. He has this miserable look on his face, like the world has ended and there’s no hope left in the world. Two problems with that – one, the world has famously not ended, or rather un-ended, a while ago already, and the miscellaneous superheroes-slash-vigilantes are dead-set on regularly saving it from minor inconveniences; two – Scrappy looks barely over twenty, the few times she saw him up close, she could see not a wrinkle around his eyes. That’s not to say he can’t struggle, far from it. Jessica herself knows of struggle. Has lived it. It’s just, he seems resigned not for himself, but for someone else. And that bugs Jessica. Makes her want to come up and start asking questions, which she definitely shouldn't do.

The tense shoulders, the slight limp in his legs as Naph made his way to Viktor, the pain in his eyes and spasming muscles of a hand he held close to his chest. He’d seen it in the mirror, years prior. The hand wielding a tool trembled when he turned to face Naph. “Take away the fear” said the kid, and it’s unexpected enough to have Viktor look back at him, arm suspended over a probe. After a beat, he added, “Please.”

The Before, the time before they’d saved the world, filled with ferocious battles and vicious mockery of her people, contrasted by the After, when pointed fingers meant a friend, not foe. There was a learning curve, of course. Conditioning herself not to hunch her shoulders and hiss at everyone who made eye contact, not to wild shape just to avoid an awkward encounter. Which was probably why she took to Xenk so fast. In the world of irrational people, he was a constant. Someone she knew would never lie just to get something out of her, a safe haven from the chaos that were Edgin, Holga and Simon. Not that Doric didn’t harbour affection toward them. On the contrary, they’ve proven again and again with their actions that they considered Doric one of their own, and welcomed her with open arms every time she returned from her excursions. Sometimes, though… she needed a quiet place to think, and with four rogues on board it could be hard to come by.

"Did someone call on you, dear?" asked her mother, busy with a babe stuck on her arm. The first grandchild would always hold a special space in a woman's heart. "No, Ma." Eloise traced her name, letting the delicate mounds guide her finger. "It's an invitation to a Coven." Her Ma had almost dropped the babe in her arms, she turned to Eloise so fast. "A Coven" she whispered, a mix of quiet hope and worry written on her face. Eloise had never seen such an expression on her mother's features, and didn't know how to react. Fortunately, Violet made a decision for her. Expertly supporting the child, she sauntered towards Eloise, looking at the letter over her daughter's shoulder. "I have almost lost all hope..."

If Shouyou dressed particularly nice, Kageyama would be the first to point it out. And so it went.

Despite what she'd told Mr Poirot, she was excellent at keeping books, and so the excuse simply rolled off her tongue before she could think more of it. It wasn't that she didn't like her employer - her friend - but on some days, it was easier to breathe when she was alone. She thought back to the detective and his displeased expression when she suggested it wasn't the suit that had shrunk, and a small smile pushed itself on her lips.
