I've had an idea for a meme theme... I'm not sure if it's already been done, and would not be surprised if I'm not the first to do it, but Aziraphale calling out hypocritical religious folk the way he called out hypocritical angels... #YouNeedToBeAziraphaled
Sorry I've gone a while without posting. I've been too busy eating potatoes.
My candle for Yom HaShoah, from across the room.
May the future shine brighter than the past, like the candle shines brighter than the darkness. May the memories of the past guide us, like light through darkness. May we Never Forget the Shoah (Holocaust) in hopes that it will happen Never Again.
For lunch, I'm eating some leftover spaghetti in a butter-based (actually Pareve margarine based for Kosher reasons) garlic basil oregano sauce with diced chicken. And I hate to sound braggadocious, but I do think I am the best chef this side of the Atlantic. And by this side of the Atlantic, I mean starting at the European coast and going all the way around the globe--through Europe and Asia and over the Pacific etc--until you get to the American coast.
I heard there's a nameless, faceless guy on an island in the middle of the Atlantic who bakes a mean fish. I heard it from my imagination. Personally, I prefer nice fish. But in case my imagination was wrong, and his fish is nice, I don't want to claim myself the best chef of the world. Hence why I'm only the best chef of the world from one coast of the Atlantic to the other.

The shooter was described as a 19-year-old white male and was armed with an assault-style rifle.
This is so sad. Another shooting at a US synagogue, this time in the midst of Passover services. My deepest sympathies go out to those affected. Baruch dayan ha-emet.
Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates!
Happy Passover to those on the second day of Pesach!
Happy Sunday to the rest of you!
Get Rid of Winner-Takes-All, or Get Rid of the Electoral College
Summary of the really long post I rambled on in, which you can see below: the winner-takes-all electoral college system is an enemy of democracy, taking away the say of large portions of the populace in swing states while allowing solid blue and solid red states to be ignored. It is possible that with a split electoral vote system, Trump still would have won, as it is hard to predict what would have happened when campaigning styles would be changed to address such a system. But it is definite that with a split electoral system, we would not have large swathes of our voting population whose voice is simply unheard. If we are to keep the electoral college, then we need to get rid of winner-takes-all.
The full post:
Contrary to popular belief, the intent of the electoral college was not to give small states more say. There were two intents. One was that if ever a tyrant would be elected, and electors had good reason to suspect they would be a tyrant, electors could check the popular vote and keep the potential tyrant out of power; this intent cannot be served in any state with the winner-take-all system. The other intent was to ensure that states with large slave populations could still count part of the slave population, even though they couldn't vote, in elections, thus giving slave states more say. That's right--it wasn't about giving small states more say, it was about giving slave states more say.
In order to open up the possibility of the first intent being served, we must get rid of the winner-take-all system most states use. Furthermore, getting rid of the winner-take-all system would also allow swing states (often the small states advocates of the electoral college are referencing) to truly have a say. A system in which a state's full electoral slate can be won with only a 48% plurality does not truly give the people of that state a say. If we keep the electoral college, electors need to have the freedom to vote against a tyrant that fooled the public, and electors need to be distributed in a proportional manner rather than a winner-takes-all system. For example, in 2016 in Florida, Trump got 49.02%, Clinton got 47.82%, and the rest went to third parties. To say all of Florida's 29 electoral votes should go to Trump is to say a majority of Florida voters--50.98%--should not have their voice heard. We should instead split the electoral votes proportionally among all candidates receiving at least 5% of the vote... meaning between Clinton and Trump. Since 49.02 is 2.5% larger of a number than 47.82 (figured out by using 100(t/c)-100), Trump should get roughly 2.5% more electoral votes from Florida than Clinton. This would put Trump at 15 of Florida's electoral votes, and Clinton at 14.
Another advantage to a split electoral system is that candidates would have to also address the issues faced by solid blue and solid red states. Using the same formula for New York as I did for Florida, in 2016 Clinton would have gotten 23 of New York's 29 electoral votes and Trump would have gotten 6. But if the electoral vote were split, then the Trump campaign would have had reason to focus on Upstate New York, which can go either way in elections.
The winner-takes-all electoral college system is an enemy of democracy, taking away the say of large portions of the populace in swing states while allowing solid blue and solid red states to be ignored.

As the American Civic Association enters the 10th anniversary of the tragic mass shooting, this is what the organization looks like today.
Ten years ago today, fourteen people were killed in a shooting at Binghamton's American Civic Association. I hope their families and friends have found peace and comfort in some way over the past ten years. As I did at the interfaith vigil a few days after the horrific event, I am devoting some time today to pray for those affected.
I am happy that the ACA is still going strong in its work.
In honoring those our community lost, may we all work toward a tomorrow with less hate and less violence.
If we treat every day like April Fool's, then none of us will be fools. We should always investigate before we blindly believe.
Mueller Gives No Answers
Mueller says that "while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."
We, the People of the United States, deserve an answer. And we deserve this answer before the 2020 primary season is too far underway. Because if he is not guilty of anything, then we need to know this for our own collective societal sanity so we can move on and debate the issues. But if he is guilty, then we need to know this while there is still time for the Republican Party to have meaningful primaries and a chance to put up a different nominee. The bottom line is, we know already that there was foreign interference in the 2016 elections, we should be working to prevent future interference, and if anyone currently in governance in any way colluded or worked to enable such interference then they need to be taken out of office.
A Purim Prayer
Blessed be the Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who guides any of us who quiet our human longings and listen for Him. Blessed be Mordecai, who did everything in his power to advocate for his people when an evil man wanted to kill them all. Blessed be Esther, who quieted her human longings and fears and was able to follow the Lord's guidance. May the Lord guide each of us to have the wisdom of Mordecai and the bravery of Esther. May the Lord help us to recognize those who think and act like Haman in the modern age, and may we each have the bravery of Mordecai and Esther when confronting those who think and act like Haman in today's world. Let us each honor our heritage by doing well for others at all times, and fulfilling the Lord's commandments to act with lovingkindness toward all. Let us each honor Esther and our other foremothers by advocating every day for gender equity and women's rights. Let us each honor our ancestors who were oppressed, by speaking up against discrimination and standing up for the oppressed. Amen.

It stares deep into your soul.
It sees your shortcomings, your weaknesses, your sins, your regrets.
It capitalizes on them.
It is that little voice that urges you to do something you think you shouldn't.
It is that little voice that encourages you to turn a blind eye and not get involved when you see injustice.
It is ha-satan, the same angel that tested Job in the Bible.
If you don't believe in God, or in "the Devil," It still exists. And even if those who call It ha-satan or the Devil are wrong about the exact nature of it, It still exists.
It is the temptations you face, the urges you feel, that little voice saying "you'll enjoy doing this, who cares if it's 'bad'" or "yeah, it's the right thing to do, but is it worth the risk?"
It is a test. It is your choice. You can decide: will you do the good deed, will you defend the oppressed, will you love those who are hated, will you feed the hungry? Or will you leave the good deed undone, turn a blind eye to injustice, keep those who are hated by others at a distance, and ignore the problems of those less fortunate than you? Will you be a light in the world? Or will you give in to It?
