scrolling thru iwtv tiktok reminds me why i stopped going on tiktok

no i’m not done here’s a list of media illiterate takes i’ve seen:

- it’s bad because it has a different atmosphere than the first two seasons: correct. it is a different show based on a different book set 70 years later.

- lestat’s character is too different from the first two seasons: correct again! because the whole fucking thing with this series is that it’s all told by heavily biased and unreliable narrators. it’s the WHOLE plot, actually. this is the first time we’ve really met lestat. and even this version isn’t accurate because it’s his biased recounting of his own actions. arguably the most authentic version of him we’ve seen was in the hurricane scene from the s2 finale, and he was real soft and pathetic there, absolutely nothing like how louis described him.

- louis has been reduced to a side character: it is quite literally a completely different show titled “the vampire lestat.” please explain what you were expecting. louis is barely in the novels after the first one. anne rice clearly had a favorite. most of the rest of the books are about lestat. be glad louis is there at all

- they ruined claudia’s character: please see point number two. we’ve only ever seen a morphed combination of louis’ incredibly flawed perception of her and whatever she chose to write in her diaries that she knew other people were/would eventually read. THAT was claudia, except not really because it’s lestat’s perception/memory/what he chose to say claudia’s ghost said, though i’m willing to bet this version of her is a hell of a lot closer to reality than louis’ version. we will never get to see a completely unbiased perspective of her story, And That Is The Point.

S3 has been so wonderfully weird, dark, and experimental. I feel like it's taken the discomfort from the books and brought it to the screen, not just from the tvl book, but from the others as well. Because these books are often uncomfortable to read! And I feel they've captured a lot of that discomfort so well. I've been reading the books and there have been moments this season that just felt so Anne Rice, even though the scenes are different, they invoke the feeling of the books, which I find pretty impressive with all the changes. And this show does feel like a huge puzzle, because when I re-watch and pay attention I notice so many new little details. I can't help but wonder what's on all the Failure records we aren't "hearing". Will we ever know? And who is playing them, and why in this order, skipping so much? And I'm so excited for the finale, but I'm really nervous, too. I feel the cliffie coming. I feel it.

every claudia scene feels less like a return and more like the story reopening a wound it never intended to heal

claudia’s monologue makes everything she’s ever done make so much more sense. she didn’t come back because she realized louis needed her to pretend to be his sister. she came back because bruce made her realize she couldn’t survive alone. she’s Always been more like lestat. and of course she has. she was turned as a child. she barely knew humanity and the short amount of time she spent being human was absolute hell. she is her number one priority. of course she hates them. they selfishly made her to satisfy their own emotional needs. she was never anything but emotional labor to them, especially louis.
