he  looks  at  jill  like  she’s  just  set  his  house  on  fire  .        ❝        no  ,      it  wouldn’t  be  safer  to  jump  out  of  a  plane  .      personally  ,      i  think  it’s  way  safer  to  be  sitting  in  my  truck  than  it  would  ever  be  falling  through  the  sky  .        ❞        he  gestures  to  the  bullbar  in  the  front  ,      the  skeleton  of  a  hail  cage  over  the  windshield        and  ,      mostly  important  ,      to  the  guards  on  the  sides  that  hold  the  augers  .

The only thing in this hospital that was an improvement from the one in her hometown was modernity . Everything else was staggeringly the same - the staff’s occasional hurried footsteps , the overwhelming number of people inside an enclosed area , the sharp smell , and the deafening blend of mechanical as well as conversational noises . How was any patient to fall asleep under these conditions ? Ever since the young woman had stepped inside the building , she had been able to do nothing but trying to keep her head above all the stimulations and the resurging memories of her own stay years ago .

The class notes had served well as a distraction , but with Tyler awake ( she thanked the heavens for that ) , they lost their sole purpose . And so , the notebook returned to Louise's backpack . Did she even remember anything from that revision session , however ? It was debatable , especially when almost all that had occupied her mind then was worries and senseless hypothetical reasons for her friend's current state . A seizure was no light matter , no matter how nonchalant he had made it seem to be.

An amused huff escaped her throat at the drowsy sight of him , fresh from his deep slumber , and she watched as he slowly got both earplugs out . The hoarseness in his voice and the bed hair that somewhat looked like a bird's nest ( made even messier by the displaced eye mask ) had already answered her question .

“ I said the cafeteria has chocolate chip cookies if you want some . ” It was not like she had already bought a pack of those in advance half an hour ago in case he did , right ? The thin smile then turned slightly sympathetic . “ I checked with the nurse about Taco Bell . It isn’t advised , I’m afraid . ” She left out the part that she agreed with the nurse . He needed a better meal than whatever that fast food chain had on its menu .

❝        taco  bell  isn't advised  ?      who's  running  this  place  ?      the  …        ❞        he  suddenly  decides  that  finishing  the  rest  of  his  sentence  is  too  much  for  his  thoughts  to  handle  at  the  moment  ,      and  gives  it  up  quick  ,      resting  his  head  back  to  the  pillow  again  .      the  eye  mask  is  only  half  off  his  face  ,      and  he  doesn't  move  it  for  quite  some  time  ,      content  to  stay  still  while  the  sides  of  his  head  and  his  temples  pound  lightly  and  angrily  .      his  brain  is  still  not  happy  with  him  for  allowing  this  to  happen  ,      ironic  as  it  might  be  considering  these  circumstances  are  hardly  ideal  .

he  draws  in  a  long  breath  .      holds  it  for  the  length  of  time  it  takes  for  the  pounding  in  his  head  to  die  out  against  the  pressure  ,      and  turns  his  head  toward  louise  .      she's  still  here  .      not  quite  the  most  startling  thing    (  he  has  never  known  her  to  be  anything  but  prompt  and  determined  once  she  set  her  mind  to  something  )    but  the  dedication        the  dedication  to  him        does  gladden  him  as  much  as  it  flatters  him  .      he  hadn't  come  to  college  thinking  he'd  have  someone  volunteering  to  go  to  his  classes  and  take  notes  for  him  and  bring  him  chocolate  chip  cookies  from  the  hospital  cafeteria  .

perhaps to make up for any lingering guilt she feels over judging him so harshly when they first met, kate’s taken to studying one tyler owens almost too much. every little tic and mannerism, every personality quirk - she takes it all in with an OBSESSION that almost rivals the way she stares at the clouds. she would argue it’s distracting her from her actual work…. she would also argue that she’s a woman who can multitask.

i  notice  a  lot  about  you  .      there's  something  real  annoying  tickling  at  the  apples  of  his  cheeks  and  prickling  at  the  soft  skin  beneath  his  ear  like  an  annoying    (  and  embarrassed  )    little  ant  .      it  seems  he's  not  the  only  one  who's  been  observant  .      all  this  time  ,      he's  assumed  she's  been  watching  the  sky  more  than  she's  been  watching  him  ,      and  he's  almost  ashamed  to  come  to  the  realization  that  she  just  might  find  in  him  some  reason  to  learn  him  to  some  degree  .      there  are  guards  he's  put  up  ,      but  she  seems  to  glide  so  effortlessly  over  them  .

❝        wouldn't  wanna  end  up  in  another  ditch  ,        ❞        he  says  ,      but  his  mind  is  miles  away  ,      wondering  if  he  should  explain  the  cause  for  his  shades  and  the  reason  why  this  gesture  feels  so  grand  to  him  .      then  he  catches  himself  in  the  present  .      no  ,      that  would  be  too  soon  ,      and  way  too  abrupt  .      reign  it  in  ,      owens  .      impulsive  man  .
