Help Canterbury Museum
As hardcore polarheads know, the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch – holder of one of the world's greatest archives of documents and artefacts from the Heroic Age Antarctic expeditions – has been closed for a while as they make the building safe against future earthquakes and bring it up to date for accessibility etc. The archives have been closed to visitors since the earthquake in 2011! We are all looking forward to being able to enjoy this resource again someday in the future.
But they need our help. As the Human Histories curator Adele Jackson has put it:
I’m writing to ask if you will support the Museum by lodging an online submission to Christchurch City Council? The City Council hasn’t named the Museum in its draft annual plan. Positive submissions will encourage the Council’s financial commitment to the Museum’s redevelopment to ensure the building reopens as planned in 2029. Submissions from overseas and within New Zealand are accepted. Sending a submission takes only 2-3 minutes. https://standupforyourmuseum.co.nz/ As I’m sending this to people across the world in different time zones, please will you make a submission before Wednesday 25 March, to meet the Council’s deadline. [NB: Given NZ's proximity to the International Date Line, those of us in the Western Hemisphere should submit before Tuesday the 24th, or this weekend just to be safe.] We’re trying to get a high number of submissions to show just how much support there is for the Museum. Your submission will make a huge difference.

It's SO beautiful. I will be a good person and not post pictures of the inside, but it's gorgeous and a faithful adaptation, and this first volume ends with them celebrating New Year's, 1911 - in other words, I'm just past the point this volume adapts. It makes me very happy to see them all (and the character designs are great! They really do look like the photographs!) The sheer amount of love and research in this book, from what I've seen so far, is just wonderful.
Chuffed beyond words that this is turning up in libraries. I would not be where I am now without the animation art books in my neighbourhood library when I was a teen. I hope lots of impressionable young people (and not-so-young people) discover now what I wish I'd discovered then ...
Roland Huntford 1927-2026
In 1979, Roland Huntford published a book called, initially, Scott And Amundsen, which contrasted the expeditions and personalities of each. Others had tried to puncture the hero myth of Scott in the British imagination, but this was the book that really shattered it, and it remained shattered for decades, helped by Trevor Griffiths’ 1985 TV dramatisation The Last Place on Earth. The Fram Museum are committed to making primary documents available to the public, and are publishing all the expedition diaries they can. They're also (gradually) translating them into English! I believe all the Norwegians' diaries from the South Pole expedition have been translated and published, and Amundsen's Northwest Passage diaries have been translated as well. Given that museum staff are doing the translations themselves, alongside their other work, it takes a while, but it's worth checking out what's available in the shop and keeping an eye out for future releases.

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".
A very different end of the spectrum, but this also applies to archives/libraries/museums. The staff they have running the place are there to help you access stuff. It doesn't matter if you're accessing it for a PhD or just to see your blorbo's handwriting. They get points for every person they help and every public interaction with the collection, and these points equal funding, including the funding that keeps the archivists/librarians/etc employed.
If there's an object you want to see but it's not on display – ask! You could get an appointment to see it!
Book in a locked cabinet? Ask! It's not the Restricted Section at Hogwarts; they're locked up so they don't get stolen, not so as never to be used.
Tempted to shelve that library book yourself to spare someone a little work? STOP! They keep track of what books have been accessed, and leaving it out on the table may make the difference between the library keeping it and selling it at the next pruning.
You're not bothering the staff! You're giving them that little bit more job security!
I wish someone had told me this years before I learned it.
