Overheard some seemingly white collar types talking about 'American capitalism' at the park on my break at work. Like many on the left they lamented monopolies and the proliferation of subscription services. That there's less opportunities for ownership of property, less opportunities for "vertical growth" for the population. These are very common complaints of the left in the US. However the ideology behind them is completely alien to genuinely anti-capitalist politics.
The concern for generalized petty-proprietership, the fear of "owning nothing," these are the fears of the proletarianizing sectors of the petty bourgeois and professional class, and this concern for petty property and verticality is the moral of small capital, not of the revolutionary proletariat. In some ways the communist moral is summed up contra this perspective very well with the old slogan of Eugene Debs--"when I rise it will be with my class, not above it" (Debs" electoralist shenanigans aside).
Communism means the generalization of the proletarian condition, of social labor and socialized industry. It means "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need," the abolition of private property, wage-capital relations, the collective management of production and distribution by the democratically associated producers, in our workplaces and communities, not state-bourgeois redistribution schemes for petty plots, money, small businesses, etc.

Communists need to be wholly against any attempt to preserve any kind of property regime for nations classes etc. under the name of communism. The only kind of property rights I could even think it appropriate to define and put forth is something like immediate usufructuary rights as it pertains to individual self determination. No nation, class, etc, has any right to any land, property, etc. except the whole of the international proletariat to the whole of the world managed in common. This is the only standpoint that can even be considered communist.
it's always "did you really need to burn down your workplace to prove a point" and never "how was the revenge arson? did you have fun doing revenge arson? were the flames pretty?"
On the morning of April 7, 2026, a fire was started at the Kimberly-Clark Distribution Center in Ontario, California. It escalated to a six-alarm fire and took nearly twelve hours to extinguish. The facility was completely destroyed and declared a "total loss". There were no injuries or deaths. An employee who was working in the warehouse is accused of arson.
Authorities stated that the employee had shared videos of himself starting the fire on Facebook, saying "all you had to do was pay us enough to live" and "there goes your inventory" while lighting pallets of toilet paper ablaze.
ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS PAY US ENOUGH TO LIVE
No injuries. No deaths. This was a protest fire. This is why unions are important, to prevent frustrations like these, to ensure people are paid enough to live.
I think many people over emphasize the impact or meaning of something like this.
Brilliant spectacular event--but the class is not organized, in fact the precondition of this worker organizing with his coworkers--their mutual condition as workers--has been denied and done away with by the act of individual sabotage.
NOT ALL SABOTAGE IS CREATED EQUAL
Coordinated work stoppages, sabotage of machinery and other equipment is not equivalent to an atomized worker lashing out. The collective struggle is here denied. The man's fellow workers are left without employment and angry. The class is divided for a spectacular image to be recreated online, in the news, for other atomized individuals to project their own frustrations onto--but then what?
What does this instruct us? To connect with each other and overcome the division between work and life that capitalism and its property regime imposes on us? It seems more it just encourages more atomized, directionless violence. The class is denied. Collective liberation is denied. Is it simply individual satisfaction and a disconnected nihilism mediated by images which is affirmed?

When Roosevelt sent the fleet around the world the general mass of people didn't know what it was for. To say that the fleet had to be tried to see if it could navigate around the world is an absurdity. But those of us who happened to be in San Francisco when the fleet steamed in through the Golden Gate had no difficulty in finding out what it was for. Men, women and children fought with one another frantically to get a first glimpse of the murder machines. The papers for weeks had been lashing their minds into a fury of excitement, which for want of better name was called patriotism. But perhaps patriotism, which originally meant a protector of the patriarch, the patrician or the lord, is as good a name as any; for it practically means the same today. Patriotism is inseparable from guns, swords and murder machines in general, because all our laws rest upon those "benevolent" tools. That is why they're so sacred to our ruling classes. That is why our histories in schools consist chiefly of scenes of bloody murder frays enacted on a large scale. That is why such butchers as Napoleon and Nelson and Alexander and others of the same tribe are held up before the child mind as the greatest heroes of the world. That is why a gun and a sword are the dearest things to a boy. That is why the workers' boys consider it an honor to parade in a uniform with a knife stuck at the end of a gun. That is why they don't hesitate to join the army and the militia, never realizing that any moment they may be called upon to stick that knife in the heart of their own father and brother.
When the militia boys in Lawrence were asked if they were not ashamed of their jobs. They said, yes. But when they enlisted they had not thought of what they would be called upon to do. And when they were called to Lawrence they had to go or get court-martialed. At Lawrence they had to act as snarling dogs to their fellow worker to carry out the orders of their superior officers.
Of course, patriotism is holy. Holy to whom? To the man that gets the lead and steel inside his guts; or to the man who sends it there; or to the wife and children left behind; or to the mother that gave birth to the murdered or the murderer. Don't answer all at once, boys.
But here comes Johnny Simpleton. Listen to his solemn voice. "Patriotism protects the home and our country, and there is nothing holier than that." Where are our homes? And, pray tell, where is our country? Are the houses we live in ours? No, not as a rule. A good many of us can't afford to live in houses any more. We're like "the Son of man." We have not that to which we can lean our heads. And the powers that be have no more use for us than they had for the Son of man. Like him we are always agitating and saying mean things about the white-washed sepulchers full of rotten bones. As for our country? Whose country do we live in? All we have to do to find out is to ask our boss all in a bunch for a little more wages, and he'll speedily show us whose country we live in. He'll show us who own the police, the judge, the militia and all the other patriotic implements.
Now aren't we proud to raise our sons and daughters ready to stab us in the name of patriotism? Aren't we proud to fight for the protection of a set of highway robbers such as the Carnegies, Morgans, Rockefeller et al?
In England the revolutionary sentiment is far ahead of us in America. In their open air meetings thousands upon thousands of people assemble, where they make it hot for the police. Sometimes they cut down the horses under them. In the government paper with its millions of subscribers, the striking miners have inserted a circular letter, addressed to the soldiers of Britain, asking them not to shoot down the miners, because they are battling for bread, and are their own fathers and brothers.
This letter is headed by an explosion to show that it is treason against the government. In other words it is treason against the government of Britain for the soldiers not to kill the workers who are battling for bread. This is correct. It is so in every country. That is what patriotism means.
Now, don't you think, fellow workers, that you had better let your bosses do the patriotic stunt? Let them practice patriotism among themselves. Let them kill each other if they like. If it is patriotism for the workers to kill each other officially, why doesn't the same rule hold good for the parasites. They have nothing else to do anyhow. It might arouse and ennoble their jaded spirit, and bring out their manhood of which they're so fond of speaking. No, you needn't be afraid. In the wars past they have been busy fishing in the muddy waters for profit with embalmed beef, paper shoes, decayed transport vessels, shoddy uniforms and everything else. All this while they strung bunting in front of their houses and hollered for patriotism. In the last war it was only Teddy the terrible who had the courage to come out to shoot a fleeing Spaniard in the back. This supreme courage was backed up by an uncontrollable hunger for office.
But patriotism is not alone good for official murdering of the workers. It is a splendid means of keeping them separated. The workers of each nation are taught that they're superior; that they're a select brand compared to those of all other nations. It's used here as a play upon human egotism and credulity. The upper class the world over associate together and inter-marry. They make fun of the, to them, lower classes with their narrow prejudice.
Well, you have perhaps heard about the peace movement. You have been invited to lectures where some highly respected professor talks about peace as against war. Andy Carnegie has given millions to this peace fund. But have you heard about any abatement in the luring of young men into the army? Have you seen the alluring posters taken down that picture a soldier as a uniformed dandy? Also it promises him a compensation for life after so many year's service. It tells him what a small chance he has to better himself outside the army. Have you heard about the different governments refusing to build any more murder machines? No. On the contrary you have heard of every one of them wanting to get money to increase the army and navy. What sincerity is there then in this peace movement? Simply this—the capitalists have found that they have to unite against the international rising working class. They begin to see that the workers the world over are getting on to the job. They therefore want an international army and navy to protect their international interest.
We workers, on the contrary, want an international working class who will refuse to offer themselves up as food for cannons, who will fight to get homes for their families. Who will realize that every dollar is simply a check on their labor power and nothing more; that when they organize that labor power these checks become only ornamental in the hands of the financiers, because the workers can refuse to yield that power to make them valuable and use their product themselves.

"We were concerned with the question of whether a given social phenomenon has to pass through all the logical moments in the real life of every society, or whether under favourable circumstances it can leap from the first or second stage of development directly to the fifth or sixth, omitting the ones in the middle, as happens with the phenomena of individual life and in the processes of physical nature. . . .
Two whole printer's sheets have brought us to two conclusions which, for any reader at all familiar with the ideas of modern science, could have been adequately conveyed in six lines:
1. the higher stage of development coincides in form with its source;
2. under the influence of the high development which a certain phenomenon of social life has attained among the most advanced peoples, this phenomenon can develop very swiftly among other peoples, and rise from a lower level straight to a higher one, passing over the intermediate logical moments.

All that is necessary is to find out what has been done and how, all that is needed is to understand the advantage, and then everything will be easy.

But that which has once been gripped by life,

“Fascism itself was established with the full cooperation of the liberal and democratic state because both always perform, and will always fulfil, a parallel function in defence of bourgeois society. The violence may just be sporadic for the ruling class. It may be found and continue to be found, at least physically, in the willingness of the majority of the working class to put up with it. It must guarantee the continuity of this support as long as possible.
It is not therefore in petitioning for protection from the state or forming blocs with political movements operating within the orbit of democracy and mobilising in “defence of the republic” that the proletariat will be able to defend itself against the shameless and unhindered exercise of the violence of the ruling class, but only through the class struggle, that is to say through strengthening the revolutionary party and by restoring class wide organisations, both of which have been missing until now.
The working class must draw the lessons from the events which years of accepting legality has prevented them from seeing; to understand that it is not legal bodies that will defend them, that there is no neutral state nor higher justice to which we can appeal against the tyranny of the two forms of bourgeois violence, which are right and might. The proletariat can only defend itself by creating its own organs of defence and offence.”

“The reasoning of Programma Communista which offers the best theoretical justification for all tendencies (including anarchism) still clinging to an oppositional or revolutionary unionism, is in fact completely mistaken. Their reasoning is very dangerous especially in the event of a victorious revolution. The subterfuge of putting off the disappearance of unions until the obliteration of all traces of capitalism - until the advent of full communism - would give unions a harmful monopoly over the proletariat in the transitional period. Far from bringing society closer to communism, this would raise still another obstacle, and not a minor one, promoting the growth of state capitalism as it did in Russia. Bordiga's analysis links the disappearance of unions to the disappearance of violence within the society, meaning in fact the disappearance of the state. However, the withering away of the state and of all social violence can only be a consequence of a preceding disappearance of the exploitation of labor, wage labor to be exact. Unions are in complete contradiction to such a transformation, both in terms of interest and principle.”
