So I read Captive Prince.
My favourite quality of Damen's, especially in book 1, is how absolutely terrible he is at reading people.
Purest man in Akielos. Abysmal judge of character. Love that for him.

While re-reading the Captive Prince trilogy I was stunned at how few scenes there were of Nicaise. He only appears in the first book and is only ever mentioned in the second and third book, yet his influence throughout the story is tangible in every scene where Damenās perspective of Laurent develops, so much so it feels like heās far more present than he is. Heās Laurentās mirror and the only character besides Auguste that cares for Laurent and is cared for by him in return. Heās the reason of Laurentās happy ending, far more than he will ever know. Heās the only character that gets a straightforward sentiment out of Laurent. Heās the reason Laurent sees goodness in Damen for the first time. Perhaps the only reason he doesnāt kill him immediately. Heās a character that never had any power of his own and yet his soul permeates through Laurentās actions. He leads the story.
no matter how many times i read the scene where Laurent confronts Aimeric, i have to put the book down and take a fucking breather
the complexities and intelligence of that scenes necessity and placement is fucking overbearing and honestlyā¦the dialogue is so fucking vicious, but it hits even harder because itās vicious in exactly the way it should be
without this encounter, Laurent would not have been able to give himself to Damen, but more like he wouldnāt allow himself to be accepted by Damen. we spend so much time worrying about Damen being identified and then, when he is how that affects their barely-there-relationship, except what about Laurent? what about all the fear and terror and absolute horror Laurent feels about his truth ever being revealed to Damen? And then Damen fucking kisses him when Damen doesnāt even know, canāt fucking see it? How can he allow Damen to take part in this taint?
except hereās Jord begging for Aimericās sake even when he knows heās a traitor. And then hereās honorable mother fucking Jord still begging for Aimericās sake when Laurent reveals the reality of Aimeric and the Regentās relationship. Hereās Jord and Damen being outright and obviously revolted at the fact that the Regent is sickā¦not Aimeric.
no matter how hard Laurent tries to control the conversation, get these two, hard-headed, stupidly loyal men to see the disgust in Aimeric, for Jord to rightfully reject Aimericā¦they donāt. And maybe itās the first time Laurent actually feels like maybe he can be loved by somebody. and really, itās exactly what he needed to feel like maybe he is enough for someone elseāif Aimeric can be, then so can he.
