I wish I could find a religion to save me.
I don’t know how.
I even stopped wishing on 11:11 because I convinced myself
that it was bad luck
instead of good.
I feel the same way about eyelashes,
and shooting stars,
and the random seeds I found in my kitchen,
and planted;
you don’t always get what you wish for.
Sometimes you get bell peppers,
when you thought you had
green beans.
“here’s to strong women,
may we know them,
may we be them,
may we raise them.”
emblazoned in gold letters on the front of a notebook my mother gives me,
tearfully,
for my nineteenth birthday.
i am fifteen,
and she is screaming that she does not understand
why i want to die,
so i tell her i don’t.
tell her i am strong,
strong woman.
i tell her i love her,
i write this poem in the notebook,
destroy the home she built in me;
warm blankets, bedtime stories,
and all.
i tear my childhood limb for limb
as she tells me that i wasn’t raised like this -
i drown out the noise of my father beating my brother in the next room
with the silence of a mother starving herself for kicks,
picking her moments like daisies wilting in my bedroom
the summer i never opened the blinds,
the summer my best friend down the block
gave me a going away gift,
a stark reminder that innocence is purely objective,
childhood a privilege,
forced adulthood a virtue,
not a curse.
she tells me i was raised better than this,
stronger than this,
strong woman.
i want to ask her
what construction site she is looking at.
seven years old,
hiding behind my father’s chair,
tears like party streamers down my cheeks,
my mother passing me gifts that i can’t bear to open
in front of everyone.
it’s my birthday.
my mother sighs.
how did we get here?
growing up sits like
seven bricks
on my chest,
getting heavier with each passing year. nineteen,
not my birthday,
not even close, actually.
i am dreading it already,
an air strike
i have not yet prepared for,
not built a strong enough shelter against.
i reach up and press on the bricks
to make sure the ache is still there

In the middle of the night,
he rolls over and tells me,
“Olivia.
I think I am over this.”
I hold my breath and stare at the infinite nothing of the ceiling -
he laughs.
He is sleep talking,
but has been sleeping so far out of my reach
that convincing myself that this was not intentional
proves more difficult
than I am comfortable with.
I don’t respond.
I stay silently awake,
reaching fingertips out occasionally to meet
cold air.
We are sleeping under separate blankets.
Same bed.
Separate hearts,
same ache.
he handed his words to me like the tattered bits of a scrapped science fair project. "they are not doing any good here," he says as if my fingertips can mend letters into something worth reading
I kept all my poems All my heartache and all my waterworks All my soft Sunday mornings and Velvet Underground songs I kept them all for you I understand if you don’t want them right now, but please take them I think you’ll understand one day why you need them, why I saved them I wrote down my reasons, but I think I’ll keep those for myself
I decided that I didn't want to be alive. Maybe around the same time my mother decided I was worthless. Maybe around the same time my brother moved away, our house left us uprooted, and I stopped believing in God. I don't want to be alive. I want to drift through people's minds when they see roses, and constellations. I want to stop crying for the sake of nostalgia, I want to stop crying for the sake of anything.
I want to feel things like I used to feel them; with my lungs on fire, laughter so loud I went deaf to it, you by my side and sunshine tucked behind my ear Now I only feel anything with cold hands Everyday feels like it's getting colder, like you're getting colder I used to tell everyone that I hated the summer Now I would do anything to have it back

The day that I decided to stop sharing poetry with other people was the day that I stopped writing poetry. The sky scolds me each night that I close my eyes without spilling my guts. I can hear my brother's voice, "more", as I scrawl ink and tears in patterns that I have learned so well. No one learns anything anymore; I do not give pieces of me away as generously as I once did. I write poetry that means nothing, not even to me. I stunted my own growth, but by poetry or coffee or the price tags on my bones, I am still not sure.
No one ever told me stories about the moon, I had to learn them all myself. I had to learn that the moon does more than emit soft lights. She is destructive, as destructive as I have been lately. I think that maybe she and I could even each other out, the moon and I, but I am too afraid of heights to visit her and see.
