Thinking of potential medical consequences Whumpee has from captivity.
Whumpee having to carry around an inhaler because their cell had mold in it and it damaged their lungs.
Having to go through a detoxification treatment because the water they got came from lead pipes.
Whumpee walking around with a cane/on crutches in agony until they can have surgery for the leg that Whumper had severely injured. And even after the surgery there may still be lingering pain
Having to adjust to hearing/vision damage. Even worse if they were an artist or musician before.
You know, things like that.
being in the whump community is genuinely so funny bc someone will unironically say some shit like βiβve really been into head injuries latelyβ
When a half conscious or delirious whumpee just keeps apologizing for everything <3333
Love a good change in sound design in visual or audio media when Whumpee is dazed and disoriented π Everything echoing or being muffled or tinny or ringing, that's good stuff

a question for my fellow whump writers...
so, whumpee has been freshly delivered to caretaker's house, thinking this is just their new owner, the latest of many. caretaker goes to introduce themself, and whumpee completely freaks out. begs that they dont need to know it, please, please don't tell them
"what? but it's just my name," caretaker asks, confused.
βpets aren't to know and Iβ¦ if you, if you don't tell me then you don't need to make me forget it again,β whumpee pleads.
turns out whumpee was tortured severely to make them 'forget' their previous owner's name. forced to say it over and over, and hurt every time they did, until merely the thought of it made them panic.
if caretaker even looks like they're about to say their name, whumpee starts to beg for them not to, or covers their ears, or tries to run out of the room
whumpee is desperate to avoid their previous torture, but caretaker is torn. whumpee is living with them now, they'll learn caretaker's name eventually. besides, they want whumpee to start calling them by it, rather than using an honorific.
what's the best thing for caretaker to do here...? pls reblog and tell me your thoughts!
WHUMPZONE YESYESYES!!!!!! I havenβt seen you on my dash in forever!!
I think convincing whumpee that nobody knows caregiverβs true name could work here, depending on the reason given for why pets arenβt supposed to know, but itβs a long shot. It would take a certain kind of caregiver to sell this well.
I think the next move (angsty, could hinder whumpeeβs progress) is to try scary reasoning. βBut pet, you need to know what people call me in case we ever get separated in public. How will you be able to let the authorities know who owns you if you donβt know who I am? It would be awful if there was some kind of mix-up and you didnβt get returned home because you couldnβt identify your owner.β
An alternative choice is playing the βIβm your new owner and I donβt know want to share titles with your old owner. You need to call me [honorific] [first name] so everyone understands that you belong to me nowβ card. I also love the simplicity of an inexperienced caregiver just making it a rule that whumpee address them by name, figuring that the most important thing to whumpee is obeying so itβll be an easy adjustment, and then getting blindsided by all the fear and panic that follows.
I find those options more narratively interesting than my own pick, but personally, I would just let whumpee use a title for the forseeable future and focus on other pieces of recovery instead. Boring and maybe cements the conditioning, but doesnβt make whumpee feel like theyβre being forced to fail a test [citation needed]
Aww hello hello!! I'm back (sort of) (a little bit) <3
I love all of these suggestions!! Especially the further angst you can get from each of them. Like, the idea of being taken out in public could be REALLY new for this whumpee, and cause all sorts of further anxieties. What happens if they do get lost? Where does their owner want to take them?
I also like the subtle implication with the third suggestion (about making sure caretaker isn't mixed up with whumpee's previous owner) that whumpee hasn't fully moved on and accepted caretaker as their new owner. Sounds pretty disobedient if you ask me...
I agree that caretaker just accepting it and using an honorific/nickname for now is the simplest, but I like the idea of them having a friend/sibling to visit and whumpee hearing their name accidentally... now it feels like a dirty secret
are you mad that the villain identified me as the most impactful party member to mind control
is there literally anythinggg better in stories than "oh my god that's a person"
now i love & normally, at least for whump, stick to magic systems where the magic is heavily dependent on the user's physical condition, but i should really dabble in the opposite... living weapon/living battery setup where the person is just a conduit for power and anything can happen to their body...
ok so i know that torture doesnβt actually work but for the sake of our t4t rp session you gotta pretend that that it at least works a little.
doing t4t torture rp but shaking my head the whole time to make it clear that I don't support the prevalence of torture in media due to its function as a facet of military propaganda

extremely good trope: injured character sees their own blood on someone else who's otherwise unscathed and gives a concerned "are you hurt?" double points if they're so injured they're barely lucid
Identification.
A pierced ear with a tag slotted into it, a notched horn to indicate something to those in the know, a thin collar like a hospital band made of bright plastic or fabric, a metal shackle with no place to put chains, only engraved with information like a bird's band.
YES IDENTIFICATION TAGS!
My dude has a gold-plated ear cuff pierced through his ear (and permanently melted closed) with a stamped βMβ on it, an arm tattoo with his facility-given ID number, and multiple trackers embedded in his neck and spinal column (in areas where he can't cut them out)βyou know, because you can never be too careful when it comes to securing the whereabouts of such a pricey asset!
Reference pic of the type of ear tag he has:
[ID. An ear cuff. End ID.]
i need to see more loneliness in whump. not like being literally the only person around, but just... being on the outside of everything. whumpee has no idea how to function in a group setting, how to make meaningful relationships, how to care for other people, so they can't form relationships to learn how to do that.
they're so used to their own company that they forget it's normal to have contacts in their phone, to meet up with friends, to be invited to things.
they can't get close to people because they're scared of someone seeing the real them and deciding it's not worth the effort. and they don't want to tell the people they might actually be close to the truth because then they'll be forever treated differently, even if their friends say they won't.
whumpee isn't totally invisible, but if they're out of sight then they're out of mind. and somehow that feels worse than if nobody noticed them in the first place because people do see, but whumpee isn't enough for them to keep looking.

I love the trope, just as much as anyone, of the Caretaker being shocked by Whumpee's ingrained behaviors. Saying something and realizing just how bad it was by Whumpee's reaction.
But what if Caretaker just gently corrects the behavior?
They don't even verbalize it.
Whumpee kneels in an argument- Caretaker gently pulls on their hands so they stand again.
The moment passes.
Whumpee cowers when they break a plate- Caretaker quietly gets them a new one and cleans up the shards.
Whumpee removes their shirt and their torso is hatched with scars-and Caretaker looks at them all the same.
And it's a relief. Everyone treats Whumpee like a fragile glass thing ever since they came back.
With Caretaker they can at least, sometimes, feel normal.
do it scared. do it whimpering. do it whining and pleading. do it with a raging hard-on
