I hate thinking about what might’ve driven him to delete all those pics, but I can’t help but worry and wonder, ya know? It sickens me to think that it’s come to this—that people can be so cruel as to forget that at the end of the day footballers are human beings with hearts and feelings the same as the rest of us. People think they have permission to be despicable just because the internet grants them anonymity and because the footballer they’re commenting about may never respond. I’ve seen some of the most vile shit written about him—luckily not on tumblr, but on pretty much every other social media platform, even as far as comparing him to Hitler. I can’t even begin to imagine what that’s like, let alone what reading such things might do to his psyche or how it might kill the love he had for the sport he plays professionally. Leon is strong, but I don’t doubt that even his strength has limits—everyone’s does. How hard must it be to show up for every match when you know any error you make on the pitch might exacerbate the hate you’re already experiencing? I can’t begin to imagine that kind of pressure or that kind of pain.
Hate can be so loud, and on the internet, it’s so normalized. Casual cruelty garners engagement, so it’s pushed to the top of the algorithm. How could he not see some of it? How could it not start to affect him? He’s human. Who among us could blame him if it did?
We never learn either, do we? We see the same pattern in football all the time. We saw this with Leroy Sané, but he wasn’t the first to experience a digital (or a media) smear campaign and he won’t be the last. And I don’t know what it’ll take to change things, but maybe we can show somehow that not all fans are as fair-weathered—that some of us still support our players through thick and thin. After all, if we want better performances, is that not a better way to encourage them—by showing that we believe in them and their ability to grow?
Sorry for this rant that’s way longer than it needed to be; I’ve just seen this way too often in football and when it happens to my favorite footballer—how can I not be even more heartbroken and outraged? To say he deserves so much better is a gross understatement. At this point, I just want him to be happy, loved, and respected—and if that’s at another club, then maybe that’s okay. He deserves to find joy in the beautiful game again.
