I ignored this ask and planned to answer it later but Tumblr is showing a little wannabe behavior that I tend to call “I do care for cis gay men” and it’s making my blood boil. I saw suddenly a lot of Blogs that were very anti cis gay men, and full of “Gay Misogyny” bullshit tagging their “Support” and I’m really fucking done.

If you’re not male and not homosexual you don’t have anything to say about Gay manga/comics. It’s our area, you can enjoy it but you can’t be a ignorant Social Justice Warrior invading our area because that’s when people get angry.

It wasn’t a slur UNTIL the westernization of Gay comics and Gay art became a thing.

Western people tend to throw the term “Bara” at EVERY FUCKING THING THAT HAS MUSCLES. Some of the Westerns even believe in a thing called “Straight Bara” or “Lady Bara”, Stop with this madness it is bullshit.

The true meaning of Bara（薔薇）is rose, and it’s a term that came from the Gay porn Magazine for Gay men called Barazoku, literally translated Rose Tribe. The female equivalent of Barazoku would be Lilyzoku, because Yuri and Shoujo-ai manga catogerized as Lily（リり）were Manga featuring Lesbian relationships DEDICATED TO WOMEN

THAT’S RIGHT ANGRY PISS BABIES, THERE IS YURI MANGA MADE FOR WOMEN AND IT HAS EXISTED LONGER THEN YOU THOUGHT IT HAD. 

Now to get back to the “Bara is a slur yadda yadda yadda” bullshit.

Since Westerns throw the term “Bara” at every fucking thing, it has become a annoying term from the people of the Gay Manga/Comics community. Mostly reminding them of the NEGATIVITY they gained regarding Barazoku. 

There’s a fucking reason why that Magazine was shut down in 2004 I’ve spoken with a friend who knows even more of this bullshit ging on.

ANYWAY, since the Westerns DID NOT, and I’m telling you they never actually GAVE A DANG ABOUT SUPPORTING HOMOSEXUAL RIGHTS IN JAPAN. While Invading the Japanese gay art culture, THAT’S WHEN IT BECAME FUCKING PROBLEMATIC.

Westerns who tend to use the word Bara only care about changing and bending it to their will. Example: People drawing “straight” Bara, it is fucking offensive to the gay community to have their thing turning into a HETEROSEXUAL BULLSHIT. Since Men’s love is THE ONLY FUCKING MANGA GENRE that focuses on the problems of difficulties in the Gay male community. 

And yet here are the westerns to “Broaden it’s Aiming field” in order to have more people enjoy it.

Almost every character in a Yaoi manga is “made” Bisexual, because Fujoshis dream of having sex with Gay men.

So TL;DR;

the term turned into a slur because of the Westernization of Gay manga.

Due Cultural Appropriation, they turned something Beautiful and strong into something negative. Bara for example can be used as “Faggot” since it’s referenced from the gay porn magazine.

Bara is not a slur. It’s just one of those words that became a catch all term for something else. Literally no one uses it as an insult. Many gay people have embraced it.

Who said that bara was a negative thing? People just have a thing for huge muscles. Hell, bara is supposed to pander to fetishes because a lot of gay men find a heavy build arousing. As for straight bara, you do realize that bi men could find it attractive, and bisexual men are part of the target demographic for bara.

And from what I’ve seen, bara fans (like me) don’t give a shit if someone else draws bara. On a bara forum, some of the guys were confused that a female artist was getting flack for drawing bara-esque men.

As someone with no fucking clue what they are talking about you do spill a lot of bullshit. Bara is a slur to a lot of Gay art mangaka because it reminds them of the Negativity they faced with the Barazoku magazine, long before your ignorant 16 y/o ass was born.

They were discriminated against and faced a lot of criticism from straight people. Stop pretending like you know what the hell you’re talking about because you didn’t do your research.

Also you do realize bisexual men come to bara/gay manga to view gay stuff and not straight stuff? I love how your dumb ass would think to know anything about this without even thinking twice, is there gonna be straight yoai now? I can’t believe I still have to justify this after explaining it so many fucking times.  Bara =/= Muscles, Kinniku (筋肉) = Muscles. Bara (薔薇) is literally Japanese for Rose (but I understand that when you’re a weeaboo you have a hard time with actually understanding Japanese), Barazoku (薔薇族), the Magazine that started bara/the real gay manga scene, came from a wor that literally means Rosetribe/Rose association. The reason behind the name is because in Japanese LGBT culture, the Rose Symbolizes Male homosexuality, just like the lily symbolizes lesbians.

Not every artist is however offended by the term, there are artists who are ok and don’t mind the term since it’s a bit more westernized, but there are artists who do mind it, so when they mind, please don’t call their art bara.

For the women and straight people who are in to bara part: Yes you can enjoy something that wasn’t made for you, but that doesn’t mean you get to contribute to it. Especially when a lot of women and even some straight guys, fetishize men on men relationships. It’s like going to an AA meeting for your best friend and being like “So, now let’s talk about me!”. The spaces for Japanese gay culture are already so limited, and we don’t need straight people to take away every piece of space that we have fyi.
