I already have issues with the Dark Forest Theory, but here's my take (from some geek who hasn't been active on tumblr for at least a decade).
My proposal is what I call the Angler, Poison Frog, or Rattlesnake Theory (or Loud AF Proposal):
We ARE in a dark forest, but we're considered "loud as fuck" because of all the signals we dish out; we make it clear to everyone that we want to be seen. In nature, rattlesnakes announce their presence to avoid getting stepped on or scare predators. Anglerfish lure their prey by sending out lights. Poison frogs are colorful to warn predators that they're poisonous.
The problem for the aliens is determining if the species that just sent out a probe is trying to warn, communicate, or lure the rest of the galaxy into their grubby, presumably sweaty hands.
Aliens probably have noticed us, but since we're the only people looking for other lifeforms, we might be sending the wrong message. The logical move for everyone else isn't striking first, it's staying the fuck away from the one species that wants to be noticed. And the longer this goes on, the more it's accepted by everyone else that we're just not worth contacting.
Which kind of leads us to one option all Disco Elysium fans (and I guess W40k fans who don't know what the fuck happens next) will enjoy:
