Two knocks- the second just a bit lighter than the first. Something in her told her to knock her knuckles against the counter before she leaned against it. It was like a strange instinct, as embedded in her as brushing her hand through her hair. She had to do it. Eva gazed at Joanne for a few moments. She could sense that what had been fear moments ago had transitioned to something else. Something that she couldnât quite place. So much about Joanne she couldnât quite place. Joanne somehow managed to both be familiar and a mystery to Eva, and Eva couldnât get enough of her. Sheâd spend her lifetime trying to figure her out. Just as sheâd spend a lifetime trying to figure out the strange sensations that happened whenever she was around Joanne.Â
âI⌠have something important to confess to you.â Eva said without thinking. The words sounded much more emotional than she had meant. Her phrasing sounded as if she was going to tell her she was pregnant- which was impossible- or in love with her- which was possible, but Eva wasnât about to scare her away by saying stuff life that. She felt it, but it was too soon to say it aloud. Eva cringed slightly and pressed on, wishing she would think for a damn second before she spoke. âI mean I- sorry. I think I know what you mean. Thereâs all this deja vu whenever Iâm with you. It feels almost like Iâve met you before, but thatâs impossible.âÂ
The feeling of immediate danger had passed. But she still didnât feel right. Something had shifted in the air between them, and it wasnât the usual breathless longing â except, no, they didnât really have that, either. She ... She liked Eva, yes, but it wasnât like they were characters in some melodramatic soap opera where they couldnât be together, and had to be content with longing glances. This was the 21st century, Eva was definitely, openly into girls, if they wanted to pursue something, nothing was stopping them. Well, nothing but Joanneâs complete lack of self-esteem and social grace. So why did it feel like something awful was hanging over their heads, like a waiting noose.
It feels almost like Iâve met you before, but thatâs impossible. âItâs not, though!â Joanne felt her cheeks flush warm, and she shook her head. âI meanâit is, but I feel the same way. Like Iâve seen you ... in places weâve never even been together. Iâve been driving myself just about crazy trying to understand it. What Iâm trying to say is ...â Impulsively, she reached out and brought Evaâs hand about halfway up to her face, before realizing what a ridiculously intimate gesture it would be to brush her lips across the other womanâs knuckles like she was imagining. Sheepishly, she dropped Evaâs hand. âIâm listening,â she said, and even that echoed strangely in her mind. Iâll hear it.
