six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went 'ohhhh yeah i remember this', got a question on that topic, and aced it.

And that one “maybe she just resembled someone who wrote a bad check before”, oh my gosh do you not know how many times cops decide a PoC (Black people especially, but other non-white people too) “fitted a description” and harassed and/or killed them? Once again, textbook racism.

Unfortunately there’s a lot of racism that white people have trained each other to ignore/excuse, and that tends to be anything short of outright proud declarations of racism; it suffices to be “not racist but”.

The remedy:

First, do your own labour by reading stuff about racism; Blackness at the Intersection by Kimberlé Crenshaw is a good starting point I can recommend, though it’s focused on the UK, whereas if you’re in the US there may be more appropriate starting points, given the differences in British and American racism. There are also probably many videos like the one in this thread, if you are very averse to reading and prefer videos.

Second, pay attention to how people treat people and notice when it differs by race. Call it out as you see it.

Found along a pathway in an urban situation was this casccade of goji berries on Lycium barbarum (Duke of Argyll's tea tree, Barbary box thorn, Barbary wolfberry, Chinese box thorn, matrimony vine, Tibetan goji berry, vicar's tea party, European box thorn). This scrambling, deciduous shrub can reach up to 3m tall. The flexible spiny stems have narrow, dull green leaves and small, dull purple flowers in late spring and summer. The species can be invasive.

The First Gift - Draco is nervous to give his present but maybe he shouldn’t worry since it seems Hermione has a gift of her own waiting for someone special 👀🎁

As the guests slowly trickle out of the Annual Malfoy New Year’s Eve Gala they might be able to spot the hosts dancing together, whispering promises both new and old as the hours creep towards dawn.

(Daily Prophet reporters and photographers are stictly forbidden from the event at the request of Lady Malfoy — this year one intrepid young reporter managed to sneak a photograph but was caught by Blaise before leaving. Blaise had the photo printed and framed for the couple and it sits on Draco’s desk in the 2nd Floor East Wing Study as well as on a shelf in Hermione’s personal library. The sepia-colored couple can dance between the twin frames and are used to pass messages of love to the other throughout the day 📸💕)
