Amethyst scarab, grape flavored, Middle Kingdom Egypt, 1981-1950 BC

The Rock Crystal Jar from the Galloway Hoard was initially created under extreme pressure over millions of years; this piece of rock crystal was quarried and then carefully carved during the Roman period 1800 years ago.

Centuries later it was intricately decorated in gold and dedicated to the Northumbrian Bishop Hyguald; a valued religious relic. It was treasured as an heirloom into the Viking-Age by a family or community.

Carefully wrapped within a silver lidded cup, alongside other precious objects, it was buried deep within the Galloway soil.

For 1100 years it lay hidden. Forgotten. Waiting. Now finally, after extensive conservation, and for the first time in more than a millennium this unique time travelling object is on public view.
