So, I will rewatch the film more times to see if my interpretation changes, but I wanted to write this here:

I don't think this is a film about letting go of everything (community) to pursue greatness (ping pong) (as an admirable thing), I also don't think this is a film about a narcissitic man ruining everyone's life in his stupid quest.

I also don't think this is about letting go (fame and ping pong) to pursue greatness (community), because the ending, while good, is kinda up to various interprétations.

To me it reads like a "see, life is like this here" like Parasite does, you know ? As in, there is not much of a morale, but the whole film and plot is built around social commentary under capitalism. Look how it is, look how it was.

The "morale" is not a morale as in "You should act like this" but it's more about the fact that you can't run away from all of the consequences of your actions. And that it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Yes Marty is morally questionable and a piece of shit, but to say he only THINKS of himself and his pride is kinda missing the point I think. He only ACTS for himself and his pride, which is also the point.

He doesn't see himself as this amazing man owning the world even though he acts like it, I think he sees himself as this kid of a very stranded jewish community who HAS to step up, he sees himself as the one being able to make it and prove that they're still around, doing international things.

But he's also marked by American culture, which separates him from community (while also tying him to it in unhealthy ways) : he becomes the one who makes everyone's life harder, because he wants to prove it, in a system that is made to profit off him.

(I also think that he just fucking likes ping pong lol)

You really can't separate the fact that it's a jewish movie from how Marty engages with American grind culture, because it's very layered in there.

It's like watching Good Time and forgetting that the film is about white criminals profitting off of a black neighborhood

And the honey scene bro (it was trippy and a shock thing but if you look into it it's LITERALLY the whole film. Marty tells us what his friend is, a gift/link to the jewish community and the promise of better times to come, and Marty uses this story to make himself shine/interesting (which is a direct follow up of the scene where he tells the Holocaust joke to the reporters) when he would never do that shit himself, because he mistakes links for chains and sucks everyone's energy like the vampire he's working with/for (Rockwell, capitalism ?)
