Revelation of the Week: Tasseography cups! That is, special tea cups decorated with symbols to aid in the reading of tea leaves. The inside of this example reads, “Many curious things I see when telling fortunes in your tea.”

You’d think that given my lifelong obsession with occult aesthetics, I would have known about these by now.

Tasseography cups first became popular at the very end of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th, but most of the ones I’ve seen online are from the 1920s-1940s, like this one. I’d prefer a true antique, but it seems these cups are rather rare and highly desirable, regardless of age. They’re selling for between $100-$300 for a single cup and saucer!
