Basically a "final nail" thing was the whole thing about "treating real people like fictional characters and fictional characters like real people".
I think the internet pre-tiktok and pre-musk takeover of Twitter was getting slowly but surely to the point where we were becoming more mature about disproportionate harassment and hating on randos. Of course, those who have power or influence are different, and I'm not totally of the mindset that all """call out culture""" in niche spaces is bad because I do think PSAs against dangerous people done for the right reason can be important, but should be... proportional? And I think it should be just that, a PSA, not a harassment campaign. Rightoids and lolcow culture was on fringes of the internet and websites were slowly but surely learning to ban those people doing it.
But anyway, I think people in general are getting way meaner. People on places like TikTok do genuinely terrible things and it's not bad for people to be "hey maybe don't follow them" and speak out against their shitty actions. But the problem is, why are there thousands upon thousands of videos hating on random non-famous people for months? These aren't celebrities or CEOs and it's weird. What is the real difference between TikTok and 🥝farms nowadays with how they treat rando cringe people who are often clearly mentally ill and not traditionally attractive?
It's also upsetting for me personally because I have had the worst rightoids on the internet stalk me for years. Because I did something objectively good but leftistly. People tried to stalk me, tried to stalk anyone I knew including my family and friends, most of whom had to lock all their social media. They quite literally tried to irl stalk the small elementary school children I taught. They made horrible comments about me, dissecting my life, my interests, my sexuality, a time my makeup was messed up years ago, and so on. I wasn't famous, I was a nobody, but I was being relentlessly harassed and had to look over my shoulder for years, move homes, call the fucking authorities because literal neonazis decided they didn't like something I said. Even years and years later, I freak out if I see a phone pointed at me in the wrong way on the train (probably someone just watching YouTube) and have the such bad trust issues and paranoia that even saying this much makes me nervous.
Which is to say, I get very touchy over shit like this. I do overreact because it is quite unironically, actual use of the psychological term, triggering. I cannot deal with fandom drama, which is why I'm so so huge at saying DO NOT DRAG ME INTO IT. I do not want to deal with any of this. My South Park fanfiction account was my one separate corner thanks to my total lack of self confidence when it came to my writing.
So basically, this isn't a call out or whatever, but fandom going on about lolcow culture in very quirk chungus ways was kind of a line. I overreacted. But also, the fact that it seemed like no one was listening to me and WHY I was trying to explain how it's fucked up made me really upset. And how I can't deal with "it's South Park" well yes, but South Park usually (especially in more modern seasons) has something to say and doesn't usually punch down. And there are some parodies in the show I definitely condemn. I don't think it's the same thing.
(please don't look up context, I'm not trying to hate on anyone but rather to explain because people are asking)
Anyway, there were a lot of things leading up to that and I had taken long breaks before then but it was kind of a final straw. There are also a lot of discourse around fanfiction and writers that kind of pmo and make me feel like there's no winning. Plus the whole proliferation of ai makes things almost feel hopeless. I've taken breaks for a while and have for a while kind of felt like I want to sort of abandon being "wintergrew" if that makes sense. And I was a bit angry at the fandom and kind of just wanted to take my stuff away from it, which has the unfortunate result of taking it from everyone.
Idk this might make me sound like a bad or selfish person. But that's my explanation which I guess I owe you guys.
