Although I am not the original submitter of the poll for this blog to ask its followers and strangers, I felt like an alternate version of the poll is required. See, the first version had the issue that the character length was very short, and I feel like this may have altered whether some people would have answered. So I submit the poll: Are you more likely, after seeing the length of the poll is longer than most has come across your dash, to keep on scrolling past it without partaking in the poll?

Today's vent:
Ok, now that we’ve had a week to think about it, here’s another, more S1-ish fix it (as the last one was desperate and had issues…but let’s be honest, so did the “season”.)

because it already was a real world. because the humans and all the life of the earth and the angels and demons were already real. just because they were created by a sadistic, psychopathic omnipotent being for a cynical, selfish purpose does not mean those people didn't have free will, and it certainly doesn't mean they weren't real. that was the whole point of the apple business, that was the whole reason that Aziraphale and Crowley could never really change them, try as they might to follow the orders of their respective head offices (or not). it's why Adam Young didn't need an upbringing by a demon to make mistakes with his power, or an upbringing by an angel to choose to reject it. he was already human, and real. it's why Crowley and Aziraphale loved each other at all, because they were already real, too, and yeah, they also had free will, which is why they chose "to the world", and each other. the point is that it was all worth saving, whatever its flaws.
I utterly reject the ill-conceived, capitalist, nihilistic, filmed & aired "finale" of this story as the anti-life, anti-humanist propaganda that it is.
the world is always worth saving, no matter who or what has tampered with, exploited, or tried to destroy it. that was & is the real message of Good Omens.
YES
The humans already HAD free will. That was quite literally the entire point of the first season, they had free will and THEY GAVE IT TO THEMSELVES. They freed THEMSELVES. Anathema burned the second book because she chose free will over destiny!!!! And I guess we're meant to take away that this was the wrong choice, because whatever the fuck was the point she was still wiped from existence a few years later??
because it wasn't just Adam's decision to save humanity -- every voice in his head told him to end it, but his HUMAN FRIENDS reminded him of his humanity and he put an end to it and became human. HE IS LITERALLY HUMAN INCARNATE.
THIS SCENE RIGHT HERE is the scene that made me obsessed with the show for YEARS, because it was so awe-inspiring and I still get chills looking at how amazing that is, that an angel and demon are going against the very fabric of their being to stand side-by-side with humanity and go, "ACTUALLY, NOT TODAY, SATAN". EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKED ABSOLUTELY HOPELESS.
When Crowley talked about "The Real Big One" he talked about demons and angels coming together to fight HUMANS. I expected s2 + s3 to be about how the humans had given themselves free will, and were now going to have to fight to keep it. I expected maybe the original cast to come back and show how they didn't need books of prophecy or destiny or secret Christ powers to win, they could still fight back and STILL WIN.
Like I just don't know how they thought it was a good idea to go from "no matter how hopeless or how flawed, people still win in the end" as a final message to -> "actually we're all just totally fucked up beyond hope, nevermind LOL".
Especially these days? The world is so fucking bleak these days for that kind of message.

The Author and The Illustrator (3870 words) -- my fix it fic.
Absolutely inspired by this fandom and concepts I saw here, notably @rocksandboulders @theonevoice and @armageddidnt.
honestly sometimes there's no better feeling than rereading a fic you've written and coming out of it going, "yeah that actually this DOES slap. exactly what i wanted to read. fucking nailed it."

remember in season 1 when adam’s friends basically tell him to stop his angsty bullshit and recognize that just because the world isn’t perfect doesn’t mean you destroy it. you work tirelessly to make it better. remember that. REMEMBER THAT. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHA (devolves into psychotic hastur laughter)
if i didn’t know better i would say the screenwriters have never seen the show, the way the finale undermines the entire point of the whole story is truly something to behold
holding on to that message with white knuckles
The secondary universe set up in the book and in s1 is "our world but what if a lot of Old and New Testament stuff was true, plus aliens, Atlantis, and a prophetic witch."
The finale blew up this secondary universe and everyone in it. We never lived in a universe where Aziraphale and Crowley also lived. We only live in Asa and Anthony's universe.
I think a lot of us preferred that other universe. Not that it wasn't a fucked-up universe -- it totally was, both book and series were quite clear about that! -- but it contained an Earth with people we liked, possibilities we could dig our teeth into, a system we could see ourselves struggling against. It was an Earth we could work alongside the Ineffables and the Them to make better.
It wasn't Eden. But getting kicked out of it still hurts, and we have no angel to give us a sword.
i know i say this often but i cannot say it loud enough: people who comment on fics, people who reblog posts and engage with fanworks are the people who generate community and without them fandom would be nowhere, so truly thank you for your presence, you make the world go 'round <3
There was someone who commented on every single chapter of my longest fic -- their thoughts, speculation, little details they noticed that I slipped in there. Every time I got a new notification I was so excited to read it.
Years later, I forgot that happened and also had enough space from it that I got really invested in rereading my fic. I was so happy when I realized that those comments were there. It really made my day to finish reading a chapter and then go back to see what they thought about it.
The fact that I wrote something that meant that much to someone makes me tear up.
For a moment I thought they were going to spend eternity together in the cosmic bookshop writing the whole universe back in existence in the blank books...
You know, thinking about this idea again, that would've been an AMAZING parallel to God and Satan and the whole eternal flame thing. Imagine, Aziraphale's bookshop, the center of the universe. The one with the flaming sword, becoming the eternal flame and creator of a new story. Crowley, the "adversary", always keeping him true to himself so he doesn't get carried away with his power, always keeping things exciting.
And they wouldn't need heaven, they wouldn't need hell -- they would just be an "us", doing it all over again, but together, freely.
In fact I'm just going to go ahead and HC that this is what happened, and Aziraphale wrote an AU fanfic of Crowley and himself and that's what we see at the end. Fixed. ✅

We’ve never interacted but I’ve come to rely on your posts for solid takes, soooo leaving aside some of my larger issues with GO3, may I ask.. did I miss something? What the fuck was all that about in season 2, then? Was “the Metatron liked to mess about with the book occasionally” supposed to explain all that away?
I'm still putting my thoughts in order about it, but I think the big issue is that they lost all the time they had to tie up the loose ends that were dangling.

you know what I've realised?
if terry were here the ending wouldn't have felt so disappointing. because he would've built up the world and the importance of humanity up in a way that would've deserved aziracrow's sacrifice. he would've NEVER let aziraphale or crowley become the main characters so fundamental to the story that humanity took a backseat, because remember, in the book they were never the main characters. it would've been satisfying to see it end, more worth it. instead we got derailed to a fanservice romance between an angel and a demon and spent so much time on their relationship while letting the human core of it become a setting for their romance.
which is fine but you can't do that and try to steer back to the original idea behind the ending as if you haven't neglected the worldbuilding and the development of humanity in general. why should I care about jesus and him reconnecting with humans? why should I care about the human philosophy? why spend 90% of your story on the romance which terry would have never let become so integral to the plot only to disregard it for the humanity you never explored to begin with?
its painfully obvious that neil gaiman ran away with his own ideas. season 1 is a perfect reflection of terry's influence with how big the characters of adam and his friends, anathema, tracy, everyone was ALONG with the world in general. yes we had aziracrow and their relationship was up to interpretation and ultimately did not matter to the story at all. fuck you neil gaiman for ruining terrys story. fuck you in general but fuck you fuck you fuck you.
I have very conflicting and opposing thoughts and feelings about this finale (positive and negative) but you bring up a FANTASTIC point about something that bothered me.
The whole point of the original story is that Aziraphale and Crowley are really kind of secondary to humanity. The story was ABOUT humanity, in all of our messiness and evilness and goodness, and these two falling in love with it.
Humanity already freed themselves. Humanity already chose free will.
Selfishly, did I want to see more of A&C? Yes, but also, that's not the whole story. And one thing I'm disappointed about is that the plotline of S3 feels counter to the point of S1.
Anathema burned the second book. She chose to make her own path. Adam erased his lineage and gave up his powers. He chose to make his own path. I still don't think the ending means that was all for nothing, because they showed our ineffable husbands that they didn't need to be chained to their prescribed fates, they could fight back and even win.
However, I DO think that this ending REALLY weakens the impact and plot of the original story. The story was ALREADY that humans chose free will and they GAVE IT TO THEMSELVES. Yes, humans have done terrible shit, but that doesn't mean we have to wipe everything out to do better in the future. That's what God does, even with the kids. Humans, on the other hand, forged ahead.
That's a real, impactful message because yeah, humans have done and are currently doing some really terrible, awful and fucked up shit. THAT is reality. Does the story really need to be that we had to wipe everything out to start with a clean slate? Or can't it be a story that NO MATTER HOW BAD IT GETS, that WE can still choose to fight back and fight for the rights to our own destiny?
What I was hoping for, in the sequels, was a story of humanity fighting to keep it and winning, and Aziraphale and Crowley choosing to help them at their own risk. And instead we got, "Haha you thought they won -- jk SUCKERS they all DIED and there was nothing they could do about it and the only way they can be brought back is if Divine Powers want them to exist again. But they won't be these children, no, you'll have NEW children who haven't been tainted and ruined."
Even Jesus being basically an afterthought instead of the forefront of the plot goes along with this. He literally served no purpose except to bring Aziraphale back to Earth. Bringing uplifting messages to the people? Meh, whatever, they all die literally minutes later. What. Crowley basically going, "Oh yeah, Jesus -- well anyway let's get going."
All the things Joshua offers them means nothing, it's as junky as the pizza he's offering -- it feels good, but they have absolutely no power in that situation, they're just going to die and that's that. 🤷♀️ Oops, bye bye air fryers.
It just feels like the messaging went so backwards. We went from "the human spirit has this incredible power to keep on going and WIN, even when things look absolutely hopeless" to "well actually humans really only have the power They want you to have, and if you want more you better hope you have powerful friends, and They will only give you 'power' if it's amusing to Them".
Which like... doesn't feel too far off from how reality feels right now... but that's not the reason why I fell in love with the Good Omens story in the first place.
I really thought that Aziraphale and Crowley were going to rewrite the Book of Life.
I really thought they were going to become the Illustrator and Author.
I really thought that's why all the books in the shop were made blank.
I really thought God wasn't going to actually exist in a true form, and instead be a kind of omnipresent power of creation.
I really thought that they were going to have their forced-proximity-making-up-with-each-other as they were required to work together to write the new Book of Life.
I really thought that they were going to choose *their* humanity and not a new one.
I really thought they would still be themselves at the end.
I really thought the moral of the story was that the humanity they had was worth protecting, and that life itself (whether mortal or otherwise) was beautiful and inherently important.
I really thought this story was about a love that transcends.
I understand the path they took. However. I do think it missed the mark on what the show was really trying to say.
Ohhhh I would've really loved to see this ending.
