separation tranquility [Jean Kirschtein/Mikasa Ackerman]

Jean always figured that firsts were supposed to be made of fire and excitement, the sparks of touches and the turn of his stomach when she would look at him and smile. First weekends were supposed to be like that, first getaways, with the occasional bout of laziness. But Mikasa was never made of conventions, and he learned that she found strength and trust in time alone when she pressed a kiss to his forehead and said she’d be out on the beach, and she’d see him in the afternoon. They didn’t need words to understand; squeezes of the hand, a gentle reminder to wear sunscreen, and the look she gave him on her way out, were enough.

It’s the height of summer and its first storm when Mikasa finds him huddled in the corner of the living room, far from the window. She’s home from work, calling his name, peering into this room and that while her umbrella dries in the sink, and she stumbles upon him, even with all the lights on. And Jean’s hugging his knees to his chest with their duvet in a death grip, tighter and tighter with each clap of thunder that seeps through the glass of the closed windows. Like he’s trying to block everything out, even the fact that she’s there at all.
