//please stop calling m/m ships yaoi
this post isn't meant to call anyone out or make anyone feel bad, it's just meant to be informative. I've seen this around enough and I would appreciate it stopping
as a guy who's into guys, I find it incredibly demeaning to see people like me equated with yaoi, which is m/m content that's written to appeal mostly to women and often does a great job of fetishizing it in the process. so please understand why I'm not comfortable with that and other people likely aren't either
of course I can't speak for everyone, and I can't force anyone to stop saying it, but I just wanted to make it clear that you may not be saying what you think you are if you use that word
//anyways, Iâm.... definitely dropping some really old threads, especially with people who I donât think Iâve seen around lately. I donât know the specific ones yet but if you think that applies to you and you care strongly for one of our threads, shoot me a message, Iâm not actually deleting anything out of my drafts for a little while yet
//soren wonât work with his back to the door. regardless of whether itâs a bedroom or a library, he finds himself unable to focus if he canât keep at least his peripheral vision on the door(s) to know if anyone is coming or going who he should be worried about. ideally heâd work with his back to the wall, but thatâs not super easy in small spaces so he can settle for keeping the door to his right or left

âI had hoped for an opportunity to bring you here for a long time,â was the first thing he went to to break the silence. It sounded a tad over-enthusiastic, Marth decided once the words had left his mouth, but they were nothing short of the truth. Soren had never expressed any kind of interest for what might be found in the castle - unless it involved business. An interesting trait, the prince had noted after some time, given the mage was one of the few heâd let roam freely through the halls without hesitation.
They were to spend the evening together, however, which was as good an excuse as one Marth never expected to have. He had surprised himself offering Soren his company for the night, but the mercenary had responded in kind by accepting. And, while the swordsman was first tempted to try and come up with something that would impress his guest, he soon decided it was probably best to settle for something pleasantly comfortable. Thatâs where his options decreased; according to the few members of the Greil Mercenaries Marth had asked, there were few things Soren had for hobbies aside from books and tactics.
Which is what prompted Marth to bring him here, on the second floor of the castle he called home. Few rooms here would be of interest after the sun had set, but there was one he found reliable in that department at any time of day. After producing a key ring from a pouch at his belt, he unlocked one of the doors and gestured for Soren to go in, the smell of both old and new books hitting him shortly after he followed.
âIt may not be the library of the Holy Kingdom, or even Khadeinâs, but I am certain you can find quite a few manuals you have yet to get your hands on here,â he said in his most inviting voice, slowly pacing into the room. âI would welcome you to help yourself, but, as I believe you have told me yourself, nothing is quite free in this world.â He paused for a short moment, his eyes bright with amusement, waiting for his statement to properly seize Sorenâs attention. Only then, he nodded in the direction of a sitting area at one end of the large room. Couches, sofas and other varieties of comfortable chairs were placed in an orderly fashion, but, most noticeably, the area sported two of them facing the other with a table and a chess board separating them. âWill you do me the honor ?â
Prince Marth had perhaps outdone himself with this, Soren thought. Of course it wasnât Meliorâs vast archives, nor would it be comparable to Khadeinâs vast wealth of magical texts; Altea was a small country. But heâd seen what he needed to -- the key Marth used to unlock the doors, the comfortable and unoccupied seating. This place was private, and therefore quiet. That was more than could be said of any place the prince had named in comparison.
That wasnât to say that he wanted to be left alone now, though. Heâd been prepared for an evening spent with the prince.
âI have to admit,â Soren said, tearing his eyes away from the shelves momentarily, âIâm not sure what I expected. Nothing actually relating to this âholidayâ, of course, but...â He trailed off, distracted again by the titles close enough to get a glimpse of as he searched for the right words. Some of the titles were in Altean, which likewise did little to help him ignore his curiosity. His gaze wandered across the room, settling back on Marth. â...Iâm glad that I said yes, I suppose.â
The few words the prince had said before they entered had not been lost on Soren, but he thought it would be best to leave them unanswered for now. Soren knew he wasnât enjoyable for others to be around or talk to; it was something heâd accepted years ago. What Marth saw in him, he couldnât say, but prior to tonight heâd been happy to keep Marth at armâs length rather than let the prince discover how unsociable he was. Apparently, Marth hadnât noticed that for himself quite yet.
â...And it would be my pleasure,â Soren added, finally giving Marth a real response to his question. If the mageâs mouth relaxed into the barest of smiles at the thought, that was only because he was still distracted by the entirety of this room, surely. Nothing was free... well, that was certainly true. He was beginning to get the feeling that Marth wasnât doing any of this out of some misplaced sense of obligation, at least.
âIâll warn you, though. I donât know if I can offer you my best.â Sorenâs robes made a light sound of fabric on fabric as he moved to stand by the chessboard, touching a couple of the pieces as he examined the setup. Marth knew Soren was a tactician, and a good one at that. That was what this must have been about, and Soren wished briefly that heâd not been so distracted with learning this countryâs magic before its tactics.
âArchanean strategy is new to me, and Iâve spent much of my time here reading up on history for a strong basis before Iâd delved into tactical texts. But...â he paused, looking back to Marth. âI suppose chess is only so complex. I can promise to keep you on your toes, if thatâs satisfactory.â

â thatâs right... er, please, just call me Lyon. you donât even have to use my titleâŚÂ â
he can tell the other mage is already judging him â as he rightfully deserves, but does he know? can he tell? how much do the others know about Lyon? he canât tell, he can only worry, like usual.
â itâsâŚÂ nice to meet you. iâm afraid you have me at a disadvantageâŚÂ â
Soren couldnât tell if this man was being humble, or if it somehow embarrassed him to be called that.
âAlright... Lyon.â He hadnât known the manâs name, really. Even Soren himself could understand bringing only the most capable fighters to a battle, and in this case he hadnât been one of those selected. Therefore, heâd had little reason to seek out any information on Lyon beforehand.
Admittedly, it might have been somewhat out of spite that his input wasnât asked for in that battle, but that was neither here nor there.
âIâm Soren -- strategist to the Greil Mercenaries,â he replied, albeit somewhat stiffly. âIâd imagine that means little to you, though, given Iâd never heard of you either.â
Same as every year.

Lute turned at being addressed, sizing up the man who spoke to her. What a curious mark on his forehead - that was what immediately caught her attention. Shortly followed by his question.Â
âNo, it is not.âÂ
Perhaps if it had been any other tome, she would have left it at that. But this was not any other tome. It was one of her own personal design. So, perhaps it was only natural that one would be unsure what kind of magic it was. It wouldnât hurt to elaborate on her creation, would it?
âIt is anima - more specifically, lightning. That said, it does incorporate some of the theory of light magic, to an extent. But for sake of classification, it is anima.â
âOh.â She didnât seem bothered by the question, or by his lack of an introduction. Soren could appreciate that.
âIâm not familiar with the tomes here, or from... Well, youâre certainly not from the âworld of radianceâ or whatever theyâve taken to calling Tellius here,â he began, starting into an explanation only to distract himself with a tangential topic. âBut this place has been rather confusing to my understanding of magic -- thunder and light magic? I didnât think the two compatible.â
She clearly had some knowledge of magic to even be able to say such a thing, and now Soren was curious. He had to know whatever she did about how it worked.
â--In any case, Iâm Soren,â he offered. âI donât believe weâve met before, but seeing as weâre to be allies... itâs good to make your acquaintance.â

ââŚThatâsâŚvery straightforward, but youâre not wrong,â Ike replied, his eyes darting to look at Soren before shifting back to the fight before them.
King Ashnard had a penchant for pitting strong warriors against each other, or other bloody combatants in the arena. Sometimes, it was men gathered from all around Tellius â some hoping to win a place in the Kingâs army â while others were simply taken for the entertainment they could provide. The battles always varied in some way, from day to day and week to week. The King would even use captured subhumans in the arena; those fights were always brutal, and you couldnât always tell the screams of pain apart between man and beast.
âOne will be gone, but the other could win himself a high positionâŚâ
Had that been too blunt of a statement? Soren forgot to watch his words sometimes around Ike. To anyone else in Nevassaâs castle he preferred to be quiet and reclusive, never voicing his own opinions for fear that they might reach the ear of the king. But Ike hadnât asked for his thoughts, so Soren decided that maybe he should choose what he said a bit more carefully.
âSorry,â he started, eyes still on the fight as they had been before. Then, âI suppose itâs entertainment.â Soren himself didnât take much pleasure in these events, but he couldnât say whether it was the crowds or the actual gory aftermath. Either way, heâd learned to watch until the end. Someone might notice if he didnât.
But... earning a high position... Soren turned abruptly to look at Ike. âWould you ever do it? Fight down there. For Ashnard.â

//ok thatâs everything I think so goodnight folks Iâll see what all I can get done this week
@dawnpriiestess
He hadnât expected any of this to go the way it did, much less for the mercenaries to find themselves very suddenly on the same side as Daeinâs oh-so-stubborn commander. âThe Maiden of Dawnâ, they called her, and supposedly she had some magic ability unlike any other.
Soren could guess why, just being in her presence like this.
âI suppose, now that all lingering animosity has to be washed away, weâre to be allies,â he began, making no move or gesture of greeting. From what heâd heard both this woman and her subordinates hadnât started as any form of nobility; it was unlikely sheâd be bothered by him skipping honorifics and formality.
âTo put it simply, I respect your ability to strategize in the face of a far more powerful enemy, brutal as your decisions may have been. However, I can assure you that any disagreement I may have with your plans during this truce will be because I have genuine concerns over them. I have a job to do as well.â
