Somebody said you got a new friend
Does she love you better than I can?
Thereβs a big black sky over my town
I know where youβre at, I bet sheβs around
Staring down at my shoes I didnβt think Newt would move on that quick, jumping to another girl. I learned from Minho, who heard it from other gladers that Newt met another girl from Group B. Her light brown hair was just as attractive as the features on her face, and she knew right away that she can clasp onto him just by hearing his British accent.
I know for a boy like Newt, he would be freer with his social time with girls than I could imagine him being with anybody. Even me.
From the way Minho told it, theirΒ βlunch breakβ was them holding hands, he would bring a small music player and play classical music or sometimes rock and they would share a plate together until it was empty. At first I didnβt believe him because Minho is known for teasing and simply being a shank, but I had to see it for myself.
And yeah, I know itβs stupid
But I just gotta see it for myself
Iβm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh oh oh
Iβm right over here, why canβt you see me, oh oh oh
And Iβm giving it my all, but Iβm not the guy youβre taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
Iβll be damned.Β He was right. I watched at the entrance of the empty cafeteria after the lunch hours as Newt presses his hand on the girlβs cheek as he kisses her passionately. This sudden ache in my heart caused me to turn back around and walk back to my room, instincts telling me not to let a teardrop out.
He used to kiss me like that, stifling a smile or a giggle after. Heβd wipe a few things off my face after I had just eaten something and heβd laugh at that too. It consisted of Newt sitting by me on the bench with his hands folded on the table, staring at me as I went on and on about my day in the Glade.
I just wanna dance all night
And Iβm all messed up, Iβm so out of line, yeah
Stilettos and broken bottles
Iβm spinning around in circles
And Iβm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
Iβm right over here, why canβt you see me, oh
And Iβm giving it my all, but Iβm not the guy youβre taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
Itβs hard for me to remember now: which one of us ended it? Me or Newt? Either way, our love didnβt last long. As soon as we were brought in we drifted apart, we had different schedules and I was dealt with many doctorsβ appointments while he was probably on the other side of the facility, kissing another pair of lips.
In this state of mind I just want to chug the last of whateverβs left in my drink that I stole from the kitchen.
So far away but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you donβt see me standing here
I just came to say goodbye
Iβm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
And Iβm giving it my all, but Iβm not the guy youβre taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
βNewtβs not coming back, is he?β I asked Winston, while he stuffs his face with his dinner.
βHm?β He muffles through his mouth.
I shoot him a look and wait for him to swallow his food.
βSorry,β he says.Β βMy answer is nope.β He points with his spoon, Newt and his girlfriend sat at a table far away from us. Same kiss, same smile, same laugh, same routine.Β
βAre you sure?β I asked, my throat suddenly feeling dry.
βAbsolutely. I met Newt before there was that new girl over there. Has he said anything to you since?β
How does he not see me? Iβm right here. Not even a smile, not a wave, not a hello, not a glance. Nothing. Itβs like Iβm invisible. I watch him disappear into the hallway escorted by other workers as a doctor injects a needle in my arm. What was more painful, the needle or the heartache?
Sit down in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh no
And Iβm right over here, why canβt you see me, oh no
And Iβm giving it my all, but Iβm not the guy youβre taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
My hand fell away from the wall as he kisses her one last time, almost a dozen feet away from where I stood. Neither of them noticed my presence. Iβm that far but close enough to approach him. I lay in my bed when night hit, hearing nothing but my breathing, staying awake watching the wall.Β
Minho and Winston had been very clear about letting the heartbreak consume me day by day and itβs important to distract me quickly.Β But Newt moved on so fast as if I didnβt exist anymore and I was being used like a toy, thrown away when I became boring. Newt went on to love someone else before I could even talk myself into saying a word to him.Β
If the heartbreak did consume me, Iβd be moping around by myself, too bad. I wasnβt Newtβs girlfriend anymore. I let him go.
So far away, but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you donβt see me standing here
