Juvenile Prairie Falcon landed on the roof of Science Center at Gettysburg College, this lunchtime (8/25/2016). Unfortunately, looks to be an escaped falconers bird, you can see falconers “anklets” on the bird when it lifts off.

Composite shot of three images from one of the camera traps in our ES302 Wildlife Ecology class. Raccoons, Red Fox and a eastern Coyote, or Coywolf as many mammalogists now believe we should call them! Eastern Coyotes have about 25% wolf parentage, and 10% domestic dog!
A Rufous Hummingbird Selasphorus rufus is visiting local a birder’s (Deb Siefken) hummingbird feeder in Adams County, PA. I was lucky enough to photograph it this morning. This western hummingbird species is a rare but regular visitor to the east states in late Fall. Finding them is made easier by the fact that the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Archilochus colubris that nest in eastern North America have (mostly) departed to Central America, where they spend the winter. Identification of this bird was confirmed “in-the-hand” by famous ornithologist Scott Weidensaul. It’s an adult female.

I’m an ornithologist and wildlife ecology professor at Clemson University. I’ve been a birder since the second grade. Birds are my vehicle for appreciating nature and the vital ecological, psychological, and spiritual connections that intersect between feathers, flight, wonder, and wings. In my fascination and worship of all things avian, I’m joined...
This is great! Well done Dr. Lanham
