Deltarune spoilers are so fun because i have no earthly clue what happened this chapter and every spoiler i see does nothing to really tell me that. Just to be clear to anybody, especially in the USA because I know that Catholicism isn't as common there, this is not a cool rebellion against authority. While some traditionalist Catholics are purely interested in ecumenical things like the Latin mass, in the USA a significant portion of the movement for traditionalism is made up of violent antisemites. The "church's understanding of, and relationship with Judaism" they reference here is the idea that all Jews are not solely personally responsible for the death of Jesus

This headline is missing some important nuance -- it's a headline, there's only so much they can do -- in that the Vatican said "this action you have taken excommunicates you." That is, 'we're not actively doing this to you, you are doing this to yourself, because we told you this was beyond the acceptable boundaries.'

The Vatican went way beyond what most of my Catholic friends expected -- they expected the bishops and maybe some priests to get excommunicated, but the laity and the nuns and... the Vatican has basically said 'bet, try it. See what happens.' (Excommunication, that's what happens.)

I mean, I had *some* kind of tradcath showdown on my bingo card from the day Pope Leo took office, because I grew up tradcath myself -- you want to know how wack the Lefebvrists/SSPX/these current schismatics are? They're so far outside the Catholic overton window that *my family* won't step foot in their churches. They've taken tradcath so far it becomes its own separate church -- a church founded by an Islamophobe, antisemite, and supporter of the Nazi-collaborating Vichy government (Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, it's all in his wiki article).

I honestly did not expect an open declaration of schism like this from either side. Frankly I don't think the Lefebvrists did either -- they thought they could get away with a slap on the wrist like they did in 1988, when they consecrated their previous batch of auto-excommunicated bishops. Pope Leo XIV is not here to play.

(and like @townofcrosshollow said upthread, this is not a cool rebellion against authority: this is a rebellion against the specific beliefs "you can be a good person without being a Catholic", "it's okay to tolerate other religions existing", and "the Pope has the right to tell us we have to be nice to non-Catholics". Anyone who just wants to attend the old-style Latin Mass is allowed to, if their priest has gotten permission from the Pope to celebrate it, as many tradcath priests have -- they don't have to go with the schismatics unless they're embracing the whole anti-tolerance set of beliefs.)

i love it when im rereading a story and i find these little breadcrumbs of foreshadowing the author left. everytime im like "ohoho!!!! i wouldve gotten that before if i had the big picture!!! and now i do!!! delightful!!!" and idk i just love being able to read the same story twice but have two different experiences. i like when a story has so many layers that it can keep you entertained for a long time as you unravel all its secret nooks and crannies. thats a good story.
