So side note: this year, as an added challenge for me, I’m only using color palettes that are out of my comfort zone. For the past year or two, everything I’ve made uses the same bright, rainbow colors that harken back to the days of Lisa Frank. But lately this palette has felt very constricting. I made a piece late last year that I loved, but when I used my normal colors, it came out like crap. I redid that piece /three times/ and just couldn’t get the colors to represent the mood of the piece. So for melanin march, I’ve stockpiled a bunch of photos full of “unusual” colors (at least, for me) and will be picking one to reference from for each day. (and GOD it’s already made such a difference!!!) . What’s Melanin March? Melanin March is a drawing challenge I created 3 years ago where you just draw a POC (person of color) every day for the month of March. Most media, like TV shows and movies, have gotten better about poc representation, but a study showed that in children’s books specifically, poc representation today is the same as it was in 1970–aka practically nonexistent.
