“ Ahah – I suppose I should say ‘GREETINGS’… Correct?  ”  Of course, those words in themselves are a joke. The two of them should know who the other is rather well, shouldn’t they?  “  Quite the encounter, isn’t it?  ”

Is that even a valid question? Although, come to think of it, that was something never asked to her until now. ( Admittedly, she was a tad surprised. ) Even so, she sighed, taking the time to scrawl out her answer for the child so intent on following her every move.

Flowey just directs a blank stare at Chara.  “You expect me to have kept track?” the flora deadpans.  The colors of the stained-glass mural of timelines was smudged and it all bled together in a truly mundane, singular portrait.  “But now you’re here, Chara!” he blurts out the hope.  “You can make things interesting again.”

“He does, huh?”

The frisson of pride triggered by the idea of Asgore’s praise quells any flicker of suspicion the slip-up might’ve garnered. For all that she’s grown under the king’s tutelage, his approval still punches above its weight. The best fighter in the underground. Huh. She could get used to that.

“Pretty sure I’m the only one around who’s kicked his butt, so…”  She flashes the kid a grin, all teeth. As she considers them, mischief glitters in her eye. “Why? You looking for a demonstration, punk?”

   Chara can’t help their scoff at Undyne’s offer of a demonstration, crossing their arms over their chest. “You wouldn’t punch a kid.” Even as they say it, Chara can sense they’re wrong, but hopefully their ties to the Dreemurrs would offer some sort of immunity in terms of bodily harm. 

When Chara put it like that and actually questioned his goal, it made wanting to be popular sound silly and shallow. But it wasn’t. It was reasonable to want to be popular, and it wasn’t shallow to want to be liked.

“POPULARITY ISN’T THE SAME AS FAME. BEING POPULAR MEANS PEOPLE LIKE YOU, AND… I’D LIKE THAT.” Being popular also meant you weren’t lonely, and that you didn’t ever have to wonder what having lots of friends was like. …And Papyrus would like that, too.

“ I-I know that! ” They lied, smiling to hide the (fake) quote. “ I’ll try to be faster next time, I promise!! ``

Frisk shrugged and proceeded to ask, slightly changing the subject at hand, ” So, um, where to go next? I don’t really know … you know this place a whole lot better than I do, right ?? “ Frisk knew they were probably wrong, or it was a terrible attempt to stop a possible fight, but … it was worth a shot.
