Romantic fantasy is a fantasy book with a romantic subplot. Its much beloved cousin, romantasy, or fantasy romance, is a romance book with a “happily ever after” (or “happy for now”) ending set in a fantasy world. In romantic fantasy, readers should expect an excellent romantic subplot, but there is no guarantee the book will have all members of a romantic relationship alive together at the end. Although some books do have an HEA, it’s not a guarantee in romantic fantasy books.

TikTok often celebrates stories that link back to medieval Arthurian legend and other mythological tales that entertained audiences with a mix of romance and magic. Romantic fantasy brilliantly continues this storytelling tradition in the era of the novel.
