rian finds herself leaning her weight into his hardened frame — highlighting the size difference between the two of them. she was lucky to have hendrix in her corner and she knew it. when the biggest and baddest decides that you’re worth the time, you don’t lose your shot to be on his team. especially considering his unforgiving nature during training. she might be scared of him if she wasn’t his “ clover. ”
anyway, moral of the story: don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. icarian was going to be the best good luck charm the college had ever seen.
“i’ll give it right back,” rian asserts with a grin to match his. then, with a laugh she gives him a light nudge — “what about you? are the big kids picking on you? anyone i need to fight?”
she's cute, hendrix can see that but it wasn't why he had picked her. he knew who she was, the colonels daughter, and she had proven herself in her challenge. if he could get her on the back of the dragon or at the very least made sure that no one else stopped her he'd be well on his way to making friends in all the high places and that was a win win for him.
"of course you will, can't wait to hear the first bones you crack." and maybe that was a red flag, maybe it should have been a sign to him that all of this meant too much but there wasn't anything, nothing he would ever do that meant more than his next year and he didn't care who he took down on the way. "the big kids aren't big enough to worry me clover don't you worry. i just want to take their dragons and be done with it."
it made his blood boil, to know those that had turned their back on their rules, their dragons, their everything, got the chance to be riders again. even worse, some of them were and as he looked around the party he could spot several with their marks, paired with their signets and there wasn't enough liquor in the world that would get rid of that resentment. he couldn't help himself though, without thinking about it he had gotten closer, the temptation to argue just too much. "you know i heard there is nothing in the codex about cadets killing second years, it was a rather comforting thought...don't you agree." way to make an impression hendrix.

"Dumb? Surely our relationship and the fact you can't live without me, would upgrade my shenanigans to at least cheeky, or well-intentioned blunders of the heart." Ronan accepted the drink, his countenance marked fondly with a sunny sheen; his eyes kept in their store, a steady-beaming shine of faith for his Lyra, whom readily menaced myopic remarks, or sweeping jabs of affection. "If you must know, I talked to three of your admirers, and then made a pledge of devotion to a brunette, who promised me their hand if their dragon doesn't eat them in the next three weeks. Are my chances good?"
"oh no, my dependency on our friendship doesn't make you any smarter ro, it just makes me equally dumb." she wasn't even sure when she had let him in really. preferring to keep her friends at face value, never trusting they wouldn't leave or be taken or some day just disappoint her but ronan seemed to have wormed his way past all of that and now she was stuck with the moron, even if she was silently thrilled at the fact. "my admirers? wasn't sure i had any where did you find them... and what who are you marrying? i mean they have at least made it to second year if they have a dragon so you might be onto a winner here."
"there's a party happening all around you." safiya's seen some people retreat to their chosen corners, the enjoyment of their own peaceful company proving to be better than the loudness of everyone letting go. "you'll find something to do. don't you like dancing? there were a couple of people doing drinking games. they seemed silly but they kept laughing." and then the second-year listens to what the other truly wants. "i'm sure training and the threshing will give you all the excitement you want to see. hazen's got a death pool going, you could go to him. or, y'know, just wait until tomorrow."
"i don't really find it entertaining when i feel like i'm either a glorified baby sitter or sat wonder who will be dead before the winter even fully finds us." sure it was more morbid than she needed to be but it was obvious that not everyone that had crossed the parapet just hours before really, knew what the hell they had actually signed themselves up for. "who is hazen voting for? i might just trip up his candidate if he's got a favourite, see if we can bring him down a wing or too." if for nothing other than her own entertainment that she was in fact searching for.

"i don't remember our class being this ..." he trails off for a moment, finding a polite word to describe all the cadets. "passionate about just a party." then again, they were probably just celebrating how they made it through just the first step of their college challenges.
"there isn't a chance in hell we were." lyra sighed as she looked back at the wing leader. maybe it was because their group was larger, the people lost on the parapet not such a large portion given how many had been successful. "we knew what was to be expected...i actually think i was trying not to throw up on anyone at any given time."
The third group, they're just the third group to go in but in the minutes she has been stood waiting for her turn to enter the threshing she can't quite seem to remember how to use her legs. It's dumb and a sure fire way of getting herself killed she knows that, any dragon is going to see her and realise what a fraud she was. Sure, Lyra had made it this far but what made her think that a dragon was going to pick her, that she was going to be something. She should have been in the scribe quadrant, she should have chosen her parents path not tried to carve her own, she was going to fail because of it and it was all her own fault.
Feeling the figure at her back she took the step forward that she needed, slowly moving into the valley, so far no one had taken off, no bond made but she could smell the scorches that had already been laid across the ground. It filled her with a new level of dread she didn't know possible. If the dragons were already turning their noses up at the best who would they be picking from the lesser, weaker groups that came through.
She didn't have to panic for too long though, didn't have to avoid too many golden eyes before she knew. It was crazy, of course it was but she felt him before she saw him, unable to place with her eyes, exactly which dragon was pulling to her. There was so many flashes of colour around her, each gazing then turning away, it felt like she was about to start a whole different up hill battle than the ones she had fought to get here. you have no faith young one. Blonde locks whipped behind her as her eyes caught him, the most magnificent thing she had ever laid her eyes on stepping out from the corner dip in the mountains he had been settled in.
Samhach.
He was really here.
She had seen him in the professors class, they all had, a gorgeous blue daggertail with a tendency to bond with the strongest of riders, he'd been unbonded in nearly 20 years, unwilling to step himself forward but this year he was willing and he was staring right at her. Hazen, Donnacha , Aderyn. She'd expected any one of them to appear on his back if he really was willing to mate yet icey blue eyes unlike the rest of the dragons around her watched her carefully as she turned to face him. How were you supposed to approach a blue again? you don't approach me, i am approaching you. The voice was low, mocking her quite frankly she was sure of it and she made the conscious choice to push her shoulders back a little, stand taller than she really was as she looked back at him.
"Are you always so funny?" The sound that left the dragon before her was some sort of snort if she had to place the sound and she was amused more than anything dragons laughed. "You know you're not quite as terrifying as they made you out to be." Should she have been mocking the dragon before her before he had even confirmed that he had chosen her? Likely not, but it was too late now. you want to see terrifying? Lyra desperately wanted to answer no, she didn't need too but it was too late as she watched the dip of Samhach's head dip, a guttural growl making her shiver before fire was unleashed, the cadet unable to look away as the dragon took out a member of her own squad. he was never worthy. She couldn't argue but she couldn't speak either. and i am?
i'm here am i not? Realising she had spoken to him without any words at all, it dawned on her. She had a dragon. i have a dragon.
we have each other. The tears welled in her eyes before she could stop them, a brave step forward her fingers reached for him, warm meeting her touch as she settled closer to him. you'll never leave? She could loose a lot in her life, she was sure of it but losing her dragon? Well even if it wouldn't kill her she knew that she wouldn't survive.
you made your own path, you chose with your heart over your head and i will always follow anyone with such courage.
okay.
now let's go young one, but please, do stop crying before we reach the fighting field, i can't handle my brothers reaction if he thinks i've picked a weepy rider. Strengthening her grip lyra hauled herself onto her dragon, a seat made just for her. i'm ready.
Watching as the first and second pair took to the sky lyra held her breathe. they had made it. They were riders. now it's your turn to fly, hold on.
With no further warning rider and dragon were in the air, a laughter so bright leaving her she wasn't sure how she had ever felt alive before this very moment.
hendrix didn't like too many people. they were in the way, too slow, a risk to the wing, but even he knew that he couldn't get by completely on his own, it would make him a more focused target and so one by one he was working on finding his people, his allies whilst they were hear and he'd had his eye on rian ever since he'd watched her react to the dragons the very first time. "hey little clover." he offered as he came to stand at her shoulder. "having fun? no ones giving you shit are they?"
✧ ⸻ [ mason gooding, cis male, he/him ] ; congratulations on surviving the parapet, cadet hendrix garrison, and welcome to the rider’s quadrant ! at twenty-three years old, you should know exactly what it takes to make it to graduation, especially being so poised and ruthless. though, i do suppose your tendencies to be impulsive and fickle may make it hard to survive until threshing. other cadets say you remind them of training till you can’t feel your body anymore, rising early to make sure you beat out the competition and a smile that doesn’t ever quite reach your face, but we’ll have to see how true that is. remember: if you want a dragon — earn one.
THE BASIC NEED TO KNOWS:
full name: hendrix baleford garrison
age: twenty-three.
height: 6'2
sexuality: pansexual & single.
parents: majors in the navarrian army.
siblings: a deceased older brother.
role: first year
dragon: not yet earned.
negative traits: whoopsied people from existence even before he had crossed the parapet in *training*, has no moral compass and loves having an underdog to pick on, mommy & daddy issues, doesn't believe that just anyone should have the right to earn a dragon.
positive traits: will not break the codex, respects dragons above all else, once he's picked a person will defend till forever, is rather charismatic when needed.
A SHORT INTRO:
two sons, two chances at success, when the first was a failure and didn't make it past the gauntlet let alone to threshing, the weight was placed on hendrix to continue to family name.
was raised as a career rider, no doubt in anyones mind he will be the top of each class.
sometime around his early teens he realises that his parents love is conditional on his achievement, it's a sport to them and he get's nasty for the first time in his life.
it's his first 'accident' in training that really get's him though when he comes home bloodied and bruised and he can see that his parents are prouder of him than they have ever been.
when his time came to entre the riders quadrant he knew the message without it being said, come home a rider or don't come home at all.
each cadet he has to take down is just another notch on his untraditional bed post and why should be apologise for being a monster? no one every apologised for making him one.

“Dorcha already got her first, a little red head had the nerve to run when she flew past the courtyard earlier, you’d think they’d have done a little reading.” Should he have been bragging about the ruthless nature of his dragon? No, but it had never stopped him before. He was a firm believer that anyone that got the flame would never have ended up being picked even if they did make it through the first year. “I reckon she’ll have had it with at least fifteen this year? What about you, how many do you think Damryr is going to get this year?” Some would call them deranged, but he preferred to think of it as jaded, they’d both seen too much to actually cry over it all. That and they’d been causing chaos since she had bonded with her dragon whilst he had been in her third year. “It’s a shame more of them don’t try and run away so we can send you after them on the hunt.”
"major eaton." the greeting, followed by the subdued grin in return feels even stranger when he knows that azra is here tonight. he wonders what his sister will make of this, if she would be able to reconcile the teenage nadir who rowan once knew with this one who is strictly gulse to his battle brief professor. well, no matter. whatever charade he plays with rowan feels much like an accomplishment, an entire year of trading major eaton and mr. gulse with each other like he doesn't know rowan brings out the madness out of azra. "of course. it's the best year, isn't it?" he says. how impersonal this all is, nadir thinks in amusement. "out of the woods but just out of reach from the threat of graduation. wouldn't you agree?"
It was humorous to him, the level the boy went through to make sure that he was professional with him. Everyone knew it was too much but Rowan found it far too fun to watch as the others squirmed a little, wondering if they questioned it Rowan would take it out on them given the close nature of his friendship with the younger Gulse’s sister. “I don’t know about the best year, still too many of you that the chances of you dying are still too high, I do hope you make it to third year Mr Gulse.” The elder mocked him. "It would be such a shame if we lost a talent like yours, I've always been fond of your families potential."
