And this isn't *natural.* It's not an innate state of thinking about characters - or people in general. This is LEARNED and perpetuated - both in source media and in our shared community spaces of fandom. Because if you appreciate characters that aren't white men, you're quickly taught by the rest of the community that your opinions are weird and fringe, and that you'll be shunned at best, or harassed at worst, for trying to authentically or substantively engage with those characters.

AND! When I was a teenager, there was absolutely parts of fandom that didn't embrace queerness. Fandom changed. It could change further!
