not to be an obsessed loser but "count the rice" was literally a game changer.
i love this moment of sam introducing the episode. i know he's referring to the entirety of the episode, but to me it's sam reaffirming his commitment to the literal bit of "count the rice." sam knows what a great episode he's laid out, and he knows he's going to see NONE of it. this is the cry of a man who knows he's going to spend the next chunk of time playing "count the rice," and locking in.
"Whimsy" is truly a wretched term. What maketh thee so carefree?
i read an anecdote ages and ages ago from a gay person who grew up with gay parents, and struggled to find any kind of belonging in the gay community because everyone else there was bonding over having homophobic parents. everyone else was defining themselves by their suffering and oppression rather than by their sexuality, leaving this gay person to feel like they weren't really gay because they didn't have the right experiences. they wondered whether more gay people would feel this way as more children grew up with gay parents, if the gay community would leave them behind for not having suffered enough. i think about that anecdote a lot.
a lot of the current rhetoric around gender reminds me of that anecdote. a lot of people are willing to go "transgender people are oppressed for their gender presentation, therefore if you're not oppressed for your gender presentation, you're not trans." but i don't think we should be defining ourselves by our suffering and oppression. what will we do, in a few years, in a few decades, as there start to be, say, adults who were supported in their transition as children? what will we do when a stereotypical trans person can genuinely say they didn't suffer hardship for being trans?
i'm afraid i know the answer. i'm afraid that people are going to close ranks as they've already started closing ranks against intersex people, against nonbinary people, against double binary people, against closeted people. as some people have started closing ranks against people who transitioned in the opposite direction from them. as many people have closed ranks against people with edge case gender experiences. "i don't consider you to be oppressed, therefore you are not welcome to share in this community you might otherwise belong in."
i wish people would understand that we shouldn't do this. i wish people would understand that we benefit from a broader, more inclusive community more than we benefit from whatever purity testing oppression olympics it is that i keep running into.

the other unexpected delight of "count the rice" was the moment with Hannah and Room 2 Security Dude. like you can literally see the moment interest registers across her face. that's genuine connection babyyyy!! and there's nothing my little asexual heart loves more
Hey none of those Grants look like Zac Oyama
ok but what if someone had just said the win condition twice completely unknowingly, right at the start? that's not totally out of the realm of possibility, especially in a room full of millennials. i would have loved to have seen the look on sam's face lmao
At some point during the episode I sputtered, "Wait, where is Zach? Is Zach still in 2??"

There's this notion that being able to stream professional theater shows will hurt the industry, because people won't go to the effort to support live theater anymore, and this is based on the anxieties of the film industry, but live theater isn't a film. The better analogy is sports.
Look me dead in the eye and tell me that people being able to sit at home and watch The Game -- the fandom that encourages, the ongoing investment over the years, the memories and traditions of Watching the Game with family and friends -- harms the ticket sales of real live go-to-the-stadium sports. Of course it doesn't. Of course all that *is the reason* that people care so much about sports they'll invest a small fortune on not only tickets but often travel costs to be part of it all in person. And the people who aren't doing that *can't* do that and weren't going to regardless, but their at-home participation and investment still boosts the profile of pro and NCAA sports as cultural institutions.
Maybe it's possible to fall in love with film and be immune to the romance of Going to the Cinema such that you'll just freely choose the same film in the comfort of your living room. It's not possible to fall in love with something that happens live and not want to be there to experience it. The consequences of procasts, for theater just like for sports, can only be A) more people motivated to make live theater part of their worlds, aka more money, when theaters everywhere could desperately use more money, or B) more love. Which is worth arguing for because reasons I assume I don't have to defend.
I like this because I love the audience, but sometimes I don't want y'all in my house

Everyone say thank you sanitation workers we owe you our lives sanitation workers
when my cats are scared by the sanitation trucks, i tell them that i understand, but the sanitation workers are the most important people and we must be patient.
