𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑦- 𝑦/𝑛 𝐴𝑢𝑔𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑓 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑚𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑎𝑠 𝑃𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑎. 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑔𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑦 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑢𝑛𝑡, 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐴𝑢𝑔𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑒, 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝟿, 𝑃𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑎 𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑦 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑦/𝑛 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑠. 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑛

After eating, y/n finds she can't sleep. She tries everything. Reading to tire herself, going and looking at graces samples, taking a warm shower. Nothing. She's so excited and anxious she is trembling and can't sleep. So she spends her night going over some reports grace was writing. And before she knows it, it's 0900. She runs to the mess hall to eat before hurrying back to the bio lab. “So, how much link time have you logged?” she hears grace before she sees her. She hears norm answer her but doesnt pay much attention. y/n walks in further and sees grace and norm, jake trailing behind them. When Jake is asked about his log time he says “zip. But I read a manual.” which makes y/n choke a laugh from the next link bed over, earning her a look from Aunt Grace. She lays in the link bed, making small and easy conversation with the tech helping her. 

Once the link bed closes over her she sighs. She closes her eyes and just tries to sorta fall asleep. She feels very weird before her mind goes blank. When she wakes up, it's with doctors flashing her in the eyes. “y/n? y/n can you hear us?” she hears from a tech, to which she nods “yeah dude i hear you. Get the light out of my eyes maybe?” which earns her a laugh before  she sits up. She sees Jake is already standing and defying all his orders. She doesn't speak, just stares. She knows this must be crazy. Having legs and being in a 9 foot blue body. She laughs when he runs out and norm follows him. One tech stays behind from chasing him as they help y/n get adjusted. Once she's done she trails where everyone ran off to. She sees grace, jake, and norm talking so she speeds up just a bit. She stops by grace, reaching behind her to close her gown all the way. The boy's asses are out and she isn't wanting hers to be the same.

“y/n,right?” she hears norm say. She turns to him confused before nodding. He seemed to understand her confusion. “They said your name while you were waking up.” norm adds and y/n just nods “right…” 

y/n lets her gaze fall over Jake, who has fruit juice dripping down his face. “Hey man you got a little something.. Everywhere.” she gestures to his whole face and she just gets a toothy grin back. She can already tell this guys gonna be a pain in her ass.

By the time the first night ends she gets up out of her link bed, finding grace standing there waiting for her. “How did you like your first link, echo?” to which she grins at her aunt “it was awesome. I'm excited.” y/n sighs as she stands up, Grace putting a hand on her back. “Let's go get you something to eat, hun. Then you need rest. We’re up and at 'em early in the morning.” 

The next day they go into the forest. y/n is more doing her own thing instead of being with grace and norm. “Hey why aren't you doing your little science thing?” Jake says as he messes with a plant.

“Not my thing. Never a scientist. I'm here for moral support.” she laughs as she watches him. “Then how'd you get in the program?” Jake looks very confused so she laughs again “ive been here since I was 9. Grace is my aunt and my only family. She had to take me with her. This body is a really good begging gift.”

Jake nods as he messes with a helicordian, jumping when it shrunk. He laughs and runs through them all before seeing a hammerhead titanothere. y/n is just gawking as grace tells him “dont shoot youll just piss him off!” to which Jake says “so what do i do? Dance with it?”, y/n huffs a laugh before saying “just hold your ground jake.” from behind him. He does so, very humorously if you ask y/n. And when it runs away, a growl is heard behind them. A thanator. “So what about this one? Run, don't run-"Jake is cut off by grace yelling “run! Definitely run!” and before she knows it, Jake has her wrist and is running, forcing her to go with him. She squeals and runs with him. It takes jumping off a cliff into water to get it off of them. She gets above water before hearing “y/n?! y/n where are you?!” from Jake. She coughs out water, swimming to shore “I'm fine. Fucking idiot” she couch as she sits on the grass. Jake pats her back before helping her up “we gotta find everyone.” Jake sighs and y/n looks up at the sky “it's almost eclipse. They can look for us past eclipse. We need to make camp.”

Over the next hour or so, y/n and Jake find a half decent spot to make camp. y/n is sitting on the ground and Jake is making a torch. She begins to hear whining and growling among the chirps of the pandora night.

“Uh.. Jake? Do you hear that?” she mumbles, her voice rising in pitch. She sees Jake's ears twitch as the young viperwolves come and circle them in. y/n stands up and Jake pulls her back to his so they can see. y/n was never a big fighter. Well, she did do martial arts as a pastime while on pandora, but that's mostly sparring. Not fighting a pack of rabid alien dogs.

Everything flashes by. Jake talking himself up and fighting off the viperwolves he can. But what gives y/n the chills is the arrow that whizzes just past her side, into a viperwolf. Then, a na’vi comes and helps them fight the wolves off. By the time they are done, the woman is.. Praying over the dead wolves.. And when the mysterious woman begins to walk away, Jake grabs y/n’s hand and pulls her to follow him as he chases after the woman.

As Jake is speaking to the woman, thanking her, she turns around and spacks him with the end of her bow, knocking Jake straight on his ass. y/n snorts to herself as the woman speaks.

“Don’t thank! You do not thank for this. This is sad. Very sad only.” the woman reprimands and y/n gasps when she sees the woman's face. Neytiri. They met at graces school. Neytiri must not know its y/n since she'd never seen her in this avatar body.

“Okay! I'm sorry. Whatever I did, I'm sorry alright?” Jake sputters as neytiri snaps at him again "this is your fault. They did not need to die.” she says and steps closer to him, the pointed end of her bow pointed to him. “My fault? They attacked us! How am I the bad guy here?” Jake defends quickly as neytiri jabs at him “your fault! You are both like a baby. Making noise, dont know what to do.” she hisses. y/n just stands behind awkwardly, not knowing what to do with this conversation.

“Okay, fine.” Jake raises his hands in surrender. “If you love your little forest friends, why not let them just kill our asses? What's the thinking?” he sighs and neytiri looks almost nervous. “Why save you?..” she whispers. “Yeah, why save us?” he gestures between himself and y/n as neytiri sighs and speaks gently. 

“You have a strong heart. No fear. And she-” neytiri trails off as she looks at y/n. Specifically to the necklace she wears. The one her and neytiri made back at graces school before it shut down.. It was na/vi sized so y/n put it on the avatar.. Neytiri gasps softly, her face riddled with emotion. y/n just stands there awkward.. Naytiri whispers “ma tanhi?..” the nickname the na’vi gave y/n when the school was open.. y/n just waves awkwardly. “Hey..” she mumbles. Neytiri looks caught between emotion before coming back to herself

Neytiri turns to Jake, face hardening again. “But stupid! Ignorant like child." She scowls as she turns and walks away, to which Jake runs and follows, leaving y/n to sigh and trail behind him. “Well if I'm like a child, then, uh, why don't you teach me?” Jake grins as he follows neytiri. “Sky people can not learn, you do not see.” she replies cooly. “Well then teach me how to see.” y/n snorts as he stumbles. “No one can teach you to see.” Neytiri scoffs, Jake stumbling over his feet yet again.

“Look Jake, maybe we should leave her be-” y/n is cut off by Jake losing balance, both y/n and neytiri grab an arm each to help him back up. ‘You are like a baby.” neytiri barks, mumbling “fayasawtute” (these sky people) under her breath

Jake looks at her, his head tilting to the side. y/n steps in gently “we need your help.”, to which neytiri scowls and says “you should not be here.”. “Okay, take us with you.” Jake tries, which earns him a big fat “no. go back.” from neytiri. y/n sighs “cmon jake. Lets just g-” shes cut off yet again by Jake telling neytiri “no” then following her, touching her arm. She whips around and out of his touch. “Kehe! (no) go. Back.” she hisses.

But neytiri stops dead when atokirina fly around and land around y/n and jake. Neytiri gasps as they land on Jake and y/n. y/n does as well. Jake slaps at one earning him a sharp “no!” from both y/n and neytiri. “Atokirina!” Neytiri says and steps back. 

“What?” Jake mutters and neytiri says to him “seeds of the sacred tree.” and y/n adds softly, looking at the ones looming on her arms. “They are very pure spirits, right?” which earns her a nod from neytiri.

“What was that all about?” Jake chokes a chuckle. “Come.” is all neytiri says. When he pauses she grabs his arm, and he grabs y/n’s as neytiri repeats, “come!”

After walking for a minute and Jake messing with shit, ropes come out. Capturing both Jake and y/n’s feet, making them fall down the tree they were running on. They land side by side with their own grunts of pain.

“The hell was that? ..." y/n groans. Jake undoes the rope on his ankles before helping y/n do the same. Neytiri asps and jumps down to where they fell. Na’vi ride up on direhorses, bows and spears in hand. Jake grabs his knife and tries to get y/n up to run, but they're surrounded. Jake laughs nervously and again, presses his back to y/n’s and drops his knife, holding his hands up in surrender, y/n doing the same. Neytiri comes down and speaks na’vi to the people and then to a man. y/n looks at the man. Tsu’tey. Neytiris betrothed and another one of Aunt Grace's former students.

Tsu’tey speaks to the warriors before they grab y/n and jake roughly and pull them along. “What's goin’ on?” Jake asks Neytiri, all confused. The warriors push them toward hometree roughly.

The clan members yip and part as neytiri leads the warriors and y/n and jake into homtree. As y/n and jake are put dead center in front of the olo’eyktan, neytiri speaks na’vi to him, seemingly arguing. Then, Jake asks what's happening. “My father is deciding whether to kill you” neytiri sighs and jake mumbles before saying “nice to meet you sir” and walking up. Warriors yip and hiss at him, pulling him back

Then from the spiral path of the tree comes a woman y/n knows to be mo’at. Tsahik of the clan and Neytiri’s mother. “That is mother. She is tsahik. The one who interprets the will of eywa." Neytiri mumbles to Jake. “Who is eywa?” Jake mumbles to which y/n lets out a large sigh. “Jake please just shut up unless you're asked something.”

Mo’at circles them, touching their braids that hold their kuru, and then their tails. “What are you called?” mo’at asks. “Jake sully.” he replies with a grin. y/n speaks when mo’at turns to her. “y/n Augustine.” she says slowly, knowing she confirmed Neytiri’s earlier suspicion.

Mo’at takes out her knife and pokes Jake in the chest before licking the blood off the knife. “Why did you come to us?” mo’at speak loudly. y/n pipes up.  “We came to learn.” she says, still gentle, but now insistent.

“We have tried to teach other sky people. It is hard to fill a cup which is already full.” mo’at speaks slowly, eyes flicking between jake and y/n. “My cup is empty, trust me. Just ask Dr. Augustine, I'm no scientist.” Jake laughs gently which earns a quick “what are you.” from mo’at.

“I was a marine. A warrior… of the jarhead clan.” he says to which y/n sighs so deep. He finds a new way to disappoint her with each word he says. Tsu’tey yells in na’vi something neither Jake nor y/n could understand. y/n’s na’vi is very rusty. She turns to Jake “all i heard was him saying he could kill you.” she whispers to which Jake replies the same way “how welcoming, huh?” y/n stifles a laugh “you can say that again. It took him like 3 years to even tolerate me when graces school was open.”

Growing up on a planet most only dream of, isn't as easy as it seems. y/n Augustine lost her mother and father at the age of 8 to a fatal car crash she was in, leaving the child with only one place to go. With her Aunt, Grace. Though her name means gentle and poised, Aunt Grace is anything but. At 9, only a year after losing her parents, y/n has to leave to pandora with her Aunt Grace for Grace's job. Aunt Grace promised Pandora would be magical. That y/n would love it there. And when they arrived, 6 years later, the 9 year old (we don't count the years in cryo) found the first thing that she feels is not happiness. It is fear. 

As the years went by, though, she learned to love pandora. And at 13, she whined and cried to Aunt Grace about how much she loathed being inside all day. And the few moments she was allowed outside were with a clunky and uncomfortable mask.

“I want a Na’vi like you, Grace!” the teenager whines loudly, trailing her Aunt like a gnat on a hot day. Over and over does she beg. And the same “No, Echo” she gets back. Echo. The name Grace gave her at birth. Her late mothers echo. y/n may not look like her mother, but with Grace's back turned, all she hears is her sister. Julie. y/n’s mother. Spitting image of her father, but with her mother's attitude and voice.

After two whole years of begging, y/n was granted what she'd desired. It was her 15th birthday. She is sitting in her ‘room’ if you'd like to  call it that. By Grace's room in the barracks. Full of things from earth and her own things she'd made the past 6 years on Pandora with the Na’vi from Grace’s school. Despite it being her birthday, y/n sat in her bed, flipping through a photobook. It was her mothers. The book her mother made while pregnant with y/n. Pictures from 14 weeks pregnant with y/n, up until the last entry, a month before her death. There were no tears left to cry over her mother and father. But grief stays, no matter how much you forget about it. She is snapped out of her trance by a knock on her door. “Echo? You in there, little one?”, comes from the other side of the door. y/n could recognize that voice anywhere. Grace. y/n stands and smiths her blouse out.  She slips into some slippers and opens her door, greeted by her dear Aunt. Grace doesn't look as she usually does. Not so sleepy and stress ridden. y/n looks at her Aunt with her brows knit. “Grace.. Why do you look so.. peppy?”. The words slip out quick before she can think better of it Grace scoffs, rolling her eyes, “just come with me. You want your gift or what?”. That shuts y/n up quick as she falls into step, beside grace, a few steps behind. y/n’s brown knit  even more as they get closer to where the new avatar is growing. “Really Grace? Lab duty is my gift?” y/n scoffs, and is met with a sigh. “No, echo. Just follow me.”. y/n just follows with a sigh of her own. They reach the avatar growth lab and y/n just groans.

As they walk in she greets Max with a short nod as she follows grace. They get to the newest avatars they are growing. She reads the names absentmindedly in her head. ‘N. Spellman, T. Sully but the T is scratched and above it a J., Y/F/I. Augustine.. y/n pauses.. Her jaw drops as she turns to grace. “Youre kidding. This is a sick joke Grace.” she gasps as she's just met with a grin from her Aunt. The usually stoic teenager breaks into giggles and jumps up and down before hugging Grace. Grace hugs her back while laughing “be grateful. It took a lot of convincing from Selfridge for this.”. y/n is so excited. She ends up spending all day asking Max about the avatars, and gawking at her avatar, who is now just a baby in the tank.

The past 6 years have been so long yet they also went by in the blink of an eye. y/n goes through the same routine every day. Wake up, brush teeth, eat with grace before she links, spend the day in the lab, helping Max and watching her growing avatar, eat supper, go to bed, repeat.

She knew today was the day the newbies would be arriving from cryo. She didn't think it was too big a deal because she's more worried about other things, like the fact her avatar will be ready to link come tomorrow morning. She ate breakfast with grace and saw her off to her link before going to the lab where the avatars are held in their respective tanks. 

“Hey max.” y/n half greets the man before walking over to her avatar’s tank. She places a hand over the glass and just stares at the blue body.. Her gaze lifts to her avatar’s face. Features so much like her own but equally as different.her eyes are still the same, though she carries the classic cat-like nose all na’vi have. She spends a few hours with Max before wandering off to find a snack. She turns when she hears the door open. Two men, one tall and awkward, and one in a wheelchair, looking bored of the man beside him. She goes back to looking for a snack before she is cut off.

“Excuse me, do you know where we could find the bio-lab?” she hears from behind her and feels a small tap to her shoulder. She sighs and looks over her shoulder, the tall man behind her. She turns around before gazing behind him to the man in the wheelchair before looking back at the one who spoke to her. “Youre the new guys right? Fresh off the ship?” y/n looks at them, her face flat. She can tell she's intimidating the geeky looking guy so she tries to look a bit less aggressive, and she can see the man nod “Yeah! I'm Norm and this is Jake.” the tall geek says with a bright grin, and holds his hand out to shake. y/n couches out a laugh and shakes his hand before pointing to the man in the wheelchair who's just staring at her. 

“Does your friend here speak or what?” she says flatly before she hears the man in the wheelchair speak, his voice gravelly and tired. “What is there to say? He already told you my name. Nice to meet you?”. y/n scoffs at him before looking back at norm. “Bio-lab is that way. You'll meet Max there and he'll tell you about your avatars.” she sighs, pointing toward the lab before pressing a comm button on her tablet and speaking gently to max’s channel, “incoming” before letting go, watching the new guys head that way.

Just a few minutes later y/n walks into the link room, where jak, norm, and max have migrated. She knows it's about time for grace to unlink. When she walks in she sees Grace's link bod open and her sit up.
