I compare it to the words “Girl” and “Bitch”

Because girl has been used as an insult by men for years. “You throw like a girl” “stop acting like a girl” “you’re being such a girl” and the reason why it’s an insult to them is because they’re misogynists who think girls are lesser. Because the word girl doesn’t actually have a negative definition. If you were to call say to a girl “you’re a girl”, that isn’t an insult, just a statement of fact. Girl doesn’t suddenly become a slur just because people use it as such.

But bitch? That’s always going to be a problem. Calling someone a bitch is always an insult because the very definition of calling someone basically a female dog, is insulting.

Gay is used as an insult because STRAIGHT people are homophobic. Because they don’t want to be gay or even to be seen as gay. It’s an insult to homosexuals to use gay as an insult because you’re implying there is something bad about being gay.

But queer is like bitch. The very definition of it is insulting.

Girl and gay being used as insults is insulting to people because they devalue girls and gay people, not because those words are inherently wrong. But queer and bitch were made to insult our communities.
