ᵗʰᵉʸ ᵃˡˡ 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏

perhaps    there    was    a    part    of    zoe    that    craved    the    danger,        the    risk,        the    guts        &        glory.            she    never    used    to    be    like    that,        was    quite    safe    when    it    came    to    her    own    wellbeing          ---          but    she    had    more    than    herself    to    think    about    now          ...          &        it    hadn’t    been    like    that    in    a    while.

they    had    no    other    options.            she    had    no    other    options.            someone    had    to    press    the    trigger        &        no    harm    to    chris,        but    she    was    quicker    on    her    feet          ---          if    anyone    had    a    chance    of    getting    out    of    the    bombs    range    in    time,        it    was    her.            besides,        she    made    it,        she    was    the    only    one    who    could    fix    it.            like    said    prior,        zoe    had    no    other    options.

once    the    explosion    died    down        &        the    growls    of    the    dead    seemed    to    cease    she    took    her    hands    off    her    ears.            gun    aimed    ahead    of    them    just    in    case    of    stragglers.            the    last    thing    zoe    wanted    was    to    be    stuck    in    this    crumbling    building    after    dark,        especially    seeing    they    had    just    rang    the    dinner    bell    for    other    hosts    for    miles.

eyes    were    quick    to    cast    downward    at    her    outstretched    arms,        checking    out    the    red    jacket    that    donned    her    torso.            it    was    in    fact    his.

whether    she    would    admit    it    or    not,        ethan    had    become    somewhat    of    a    safety    net    for    her    over    the    past    few    months          ---          the    community    were    still    torn    on    him,        still    viewed    him    with    scrutiny,        but    she    trusted    ethan.            the    jacket    was    taken    on    sentimental    value          ...          it    reminded    her    of    him    when    he    wasn’t    on    rig.            just    to    have    a    little    piece    of    him    with    her.            how    gross.

features  reveall  only  patience,   lips  set  in  a  neutral  line.     ‘     that’s  a  bit  bleak,   isn’t  it ?     ’     maybe  history  lived  in  rhymes,   years  ticking  away  into  its  next  stanza    —   but  it  couldn’t  be  a  complete  circle.     

                                           ‘     what  would  be  the  point ?     ’

bleak    it    may    be,        but    it    didn’t    make    it    any    less    true.            they    lived    on    borrowed    time        &        instead    of    learning    from    past    mistakes,        they    just    kept    going    ‘round    in    circles.            mankind    were    doomed    to    repeat    it’s    dark    history.

it    was    a    good    plan,        in    theory.            it    was    never    that    simple.            it    seemed    each    time    they    left    gracefield    they    came    back    with    less    than    they    departed    with.            scouts    were    becoming    harder        &        harder,        between    the    dead        &        vicious    people,        death    was    imminent          ---          it    wasn’t    a    matter    of    if,        but    when.
