my roman empire is the fact that s3 will byers was crushing hard on s3 mike wheeler. will "i'm not gonna fall in love" byers was, in fact, actively falling deeper and deeper in love with his best friend each passing day. i literally cannot stress enough that not only did will actually turn out to be gay after having been bullied for that exact reason his entire life, but he also went through the gay canon event of falling head over heels for his formerly sweet, caring and supposedly straight childhood best friend... his best friend whom just so happened to get a girlfriend and lose himself to the far too common and frankly childish endeavours of a teenage boy trying and failing to become a man ahead of time, all of this happening at the exact same time that will was developing romantic feelings for him. and just like that, everything was suddenly much more complicated than ever before. just like that, will byers had to get used to the feeling of no longer simply loving mike wheeler but also wanting him in a way he'd never wanted anyone before, in a way that bordered on needing him. like air, like water. suddenly mike wasn't just a lifebuoy for will to desperately cling onto but also the deep, dark sea that he was drowning in; he was that strange, unfamiliar pressure in his chest, the salt permanently stuck to his skin and the shivers that would wreck his body from time to time.

I do find it frustrating that a lot of the same issues that plagued Nancy and Jonathan (lack of shared interests, inability to be honest with each other, and a relationship based on trauma) were also present in Mike and El's relationship. Odd that only one of those couples was seen as better off broken up. You can't have it both ways here. It's not like Mike and El fixed those issues.
