I think all this arguing over willโs gender nonconformity is especially interesting because like, we literally do see him experiment with gender presentation in the show. Itโs just not in the hyper specific way a lot of people view femininity, so it flys over their heads.
Once the Byersโ move to lenora (an obviously more liberal area than hawkins) will is shown to start styling his clothes in a slightly more effeminate way. Season 4 has the most colorful outfits we see will in, along with him wearing more androgynous silhouettes and matching his accessories to the patterns on his shirts. We also see him embracing a lot of his more flamboyant mannerisms, swaying his hips when he walks, talking with his hands, using a more stereotypically feminine tone of voice, etc.
And in the season 5 epilogue, after heโs finally felt safe enough to come out and right before he moves away to nyc, we see him dress and act very similarly. Heโs wearing a lot of pastel shades that we havenโt really seen him wear previously, with more matching accessories, and heโs even starts experimenting with jewelry. We also see that heโs much more confident in his personality, heโs stopped hiding his flamboyant mannerisms completely, heโs much more comfortable with physical touch, and heโs very outwardly emotional and soft.
But again, because most people have a very limited understanding of what gender nonconformity actually is, those arenโt seen as examples of will experimenting with gender by the wider fandom.
Yes! All of this! Funny how Willโs swaying hips were a hot topic when s4 came out but suddenly heโs not feminine. Iโm so used to Willโs mannerisms I forgot theyโre also seen as quite gay/feminine. My perfect son.
I especially love how affectionate Will became. Like you said, being affectionate towards friends is looked down upon for men (more so at the time). And you can definitely see how Will shows it differently to his other friends. Heโs much more tender and slow with it. I wuv him.
Welcome to the Byler Big Bang 2026!
The Byler Big Bang is a fanwork event based on the Stranger Things ship of Mike Wheeler & Will Byers meant to create an explosion of content while providing structure, deadlines, and, of course, community support to writers and artists. This year, to celebrate our fifth year of hosting this event, weโll be running it in the style of a reverse big bang!
See the full schedule here.
How does a reverse big bang work?
As during a normal big bang, writers and artists are paired up to create a fanfic and at least one piece of accompanying artwork. While during a big bang the writers decide what fanfic they write and artists get to choose from the ideas offered by our writers, a reverse big bang turns things around and lets the artists come up with an idea for what to drawโand then the writers get to pick!ย
Once the sign up period is done, artists are asked to provide art ideas which writers then can claim. Over the following three months teams will work on completing a fic of at least 8k length and at least one full piece of visual art. Then, on their designated posting day in November, teams post their new works for the fandom to see!
See the rest of the rules & requirements here.ย
See our FAQ here.
How do I get involved?
Artist sign ups will run from now until July 17th. Artists are expected to create at least one full piece of visual media over the course of the event.ย
Writer sign ups will run from now until the early morning of July 24th. Writers are expected to write a fanfic of 8k words or more based on their partnered artistโs art idea.
Writers can additionally sign up as pinch-hitters to create a somewhat shorter fic to accompany an artistโs piece in case a writer drops out. You do not need to participate as a regular writer to sign up as a pinch-hitter.

he looks so Will here
its also frustrating how some people behind this discourse refuse to take stranger thingsโs setting into account when talking about willโs gender presentation. like yes, will never wore makeup or feminine clothing in canon, but will was also a closeted gay boy who lived in 1980s rural indiana for the majority of the showโs run time. he was already abused for being visibly queer due to his personality, mannerisms, and interests. and within the time period the show takes place in, presenting traditionally feminine quite literally could have gotten him killed.
Exactly! Gendered expectations were far more strict in the 80s. The town was saying Will deserved to die because what? He was small, quiet, and sensitive? Now imagine how much worse that wouldโve been if he dressed feminine. They also fail to consider how Will is poor. Most of his clothes were hand-me-downs from Jonathan and Joyce. We canโt say for sure what Will would or wouldnโt wear. Heโs already wearing a necklace and an earring in the epilogue, so itโs safe to say heโs open to exploring now that heโs in a comfortable place. He could style his cute flannels and jeans in a feminine way if he so pleases. He could wear more explicitly feminine clothes only in the safety of his own home too! We just donโt know!

a lot of this discourse stems from people having an extremely shallow understanding of how masculinity and femininity are viewed by society. femininity is not always someone making an active and conscious choice to wear traditionally feminine clothing and makeup. and to act like someone cannot possibly be fem just because they donโt make an effort to present the way a hyperfeminine cishet woman would is both homophobic and misogynistic.
Yep! Femininity and masculinity arenโt solely defined by how you dress, look, or act. It heavily depends person to person. Theyโre complicated social constructs. Someone can be considered feminine without ever touching a dress or makeup. Someone can wear both of those things and still be perceived as masculine because of how they act.
Expanding on a characterโs gender presentation because of the traits they possess can be a fun way to see them embrace themselves and their queerness. Thatโs all this is. No one is trying to say all gay men are or should be super feminine (with a super masculine boyfriend). Itโs one character exploration.
Weโve been going in circles with this conversation for years, but the attitudes surrounding GNC/FemWill frustrate me so much.
Yes, within canon Will doesnโt DRESS particularly feminine. But he is perceived as having feminine TRAITS, especially within the 80s. I think a lot of the confusion here is people not understanding where Willโs homophobic bullying came from. Many gay men who were bullied at a young age werenโt bullied because they showed attraction to boys, but because they were perceived as feminine. Feminine men are seen as gay.
Will is called a โfairyโ in s1 which is defined as a derogatory term against effeminate men. This is CANONICAL confirmation that Will is feminine. The insistence that Will is masculine is incorrect and erases a very important piece of Willโs character. Heโs GNC. He possesses both feminine and masculine traits, but leans more feminine.
Claiming that Will fans who say heโs feminine are being โstereotypicalโ and making โthe gay one the girlโ is ridiculous. We are not the ones saying sensitivity, shyness, and a damsel role are feminine. Thatโs just factually how society views those traits. We arenโt agreeing with gender norms, weโre explaining how Will fits outside of them. If you have an issue with making a gay character feminine, take it up with the writers who made him that way.
I agree that Will isnโt hyperfem in canon. If we were to keep closest to canon, I think Will would explore gender expression by dabbling in nail polish, maybe a little eyeliner and mascara, and lots of jewelry. But if someone wants to push his exploration even further into dresses, thereโs nothing wrong with that. Will wore a purple robe that was akin to a dress. Itโs not that far of a stretch to say he would wear dresses considering he already enjoys the way wizard robes look/feel on him.
And all this hullabaloo about โcanonโ is silly. Mike is canonically straight, yet no one has an issue with making him gay. They only seem to have a problem with fanon when it comes to a feminine gay man. Remember โmaking the gay one a girl?โ Oh so they agree Mike is straight now? Interesting how Mikeโs canonical straightness is only believed when itโs time to hate on FemWill. Hm.
Then theyโll say itโs heteronormative to make byler a mascfem relationship because it feminizes Will. How is putting a man in a feminine role heteronormative? How is making two men kiss heteronormative? Thatโs a misunderstanding of how queer relationships work. Mascfem and butchfemme relationships have always been subversive. In media, most queer ships are two feminine women and two masculine men. If you believe otherwise, youโre just wrong. I wish I lived in your world.
Most of this backlash against โstereotypingโ is likely a dislike for people who are visibly queer. Are they stereotypes? Do they set back progress for existing? FemWill antis think theyโre above gender norms for insisting that a gay man is super masc, but theyโre actually just arguing โlet men be masculine.โ Thatโs why these conversations always end up at: โTheyโre both BOYS! Stop making him a GIRL!โ Wearing feminine clothing or having a feminine personality doesnโt make someone a girl. Thatโs a homophobic and transphobic ideology.
And sexist. Because why is feminine Will ridiculed but not masculine Will? They yell about โstereotypes,โ yet turn around and say Will is masculine because he shot a gun and killed some demogorgons. Whoโs being stereotypical now? They only take issue with stereotyping femininity because society has negative connotations with it.
Feminine gay men already face enough vitriol from heterosexuals, they donโt need fellow queer people acting like theyโre catering to heteronormativity. Notice how that makes no fucking sense? How is something heterosexuals DESPISE heteronormative?
If Will werenโt canonically GNC, maybe this would be a different conversation. Maybe it would be harmful stereotyping. But heโs GNC. Heโs feminine. Not in clothing, but the idea of Will finding comfortability in femininity and exploring it outwardly is not a bad thing. In fact, he already has with more jewelry in the finale. Woah? Canon?
Thereโs nothing wrong with femininity. Thereโs nothing wrong with gay men who fit outside the norm. If you donโt care to explore this in your fanon, thatโs fine, just leave the people who do alone and stop acting like youโre more moral for not caring about feminine gay men.
scoobyler and the consequences of their (horny) actions.. ๐คญ
I wanted to draw an example of my hc of them sneaking away while looking for clues! the bad guys are quite fond of will, this happens often, poor thing ๐
(ps. I did nooot mean to vanish, I've just been sick and had low energy ๐ฉ but what got me through was more will kidnapping, it's good for the soul โค๏ธโ๐ฉนโค๏ธโ๐ฉน)
in an alternate universe where byler was real we probably wouldโve gotten will crying in mikeโs arms after one of his seizures

Jane!!
I FINALLY GOT A HAIRCUT
I wonder how long it took Will to feel comfortable calling himself โgay.โ I think heโd hear his queer college friends use it positively a lot, but heโd just stick with a โme tooโ at first. A few months later, it officially enters his vocabulary. It feels like coming out again when he lets it slip around his friends from back home. But then they come around to it too and Will is glad that that word doesnโt have negative power over him anymore and he can embrace who he is in simpler terms.

Will is so cutesy but in a creepy big eyed doll way and freaks everybody out when he starts staring at them
Iโm very fond of that part of Will Byers that refuses to be normal
