Scottish fishermen ca.1845
The earliest European visitors to visit the shores of Canada after the failure of the Viking colonies in Newfoundland were fishermen in the 16th and early 17th century. Canada’s eastern coast and inlets provided vast amounts of cod and other fish desperately needed in Europe, who’s fisheries had been vastly depleted during the Middle Ages.

original piece inspired by the Dutch fluyt, a cargo vessel used in the 17th and 18th centuries. I’ve been wanting to do nautical art like this for a while, so I’m glad I finally buckled down and tried it!
(I don’t have a scanner on me rn so phone camera quality is the best I could get, sorry)

Robert Gibbings Sea Monsters
Scandinavian tales and creatures
Skeppsrån (watchers of ships) are beautiful but elusive women who guard ships sailing across the ocean, protecting them from raging storms and the giant beasts that lurk down in the deepest waters. Some believe skeppsrån were originally skogsrån; their spirits trapped within the wood planks of the ship and forced to leave their precious forests to roam the seas instead.
