Perhaps the most famous North American “fearsome critter,” the jackalope is a legendary animal that combines the features of a hare and a deer.

There are many tall tales about the jackalope’s habits and abilities. Some hunters claim that jackalopes are highly dangerous, and can kill a man with their antlers. Other stories claim that jackalopes can mimic people’s voices.

The story of the jackalope dates back to 1932, when Douglas Herrick sold a taxidermied jackalope for $10. Since then, hundreds of taxidermied creatures purported to be jackalopes have been sold and displayed.
