But what makes me really sad is seeing streams of girls feeling that in order to denounce what he said, they have to deny finding any of the drivers attractive, like they should be ashamed of having sexual feelings about people.
If you got into F1 because of a hot guy you saw, guess what? That’s totally and utterly valid. If you learnt race rules, tyre strats, car aerodynamics and sporting history all because you saw a boy you thought was cute, that’s absolutely fine and allowed.
How many men do you think learnt the rules of tennis whilst gawking over Anna Kournikova? Or the ethics and complexities of the modelling industry whilst lusting after Cindy Crawford. Or the expectations and operations of the music industry whilst trying to decide if Britney or Christina was hotter.
How many straight men actively take an interest in the careers or industry of any successful woman they happen to find attractive?
Women shouldn’t have to feel the need to defend themselves, or list all the other various ways they got into the sport. Women should feel comfortable enough to say “So what if I did?!” Because the most important thing is that you enjoy the sport. How women got into it shouldn’t be the question. The real question is “What are you going to do make them feel included now they’re here?”
