way too deeply analyzing dl!desert duo
so as we all know, desert duo, or c!Grian and c!scar, were one of the most unhealthy relationships in double life.
Grian emotionally cheated on Scar with BigB, and Scar retaliated by harming himself, and therefore Grian.
However, I think the reasons for this lay deeper than surface level "Grian didn't want to be paired with Scar"
He did. He loves Scar. The problem was, that he had always loved Scar, and the last time that love was made known, he ended up having to brutally kill Scar and then himself.
c! Grian canonically remembers the other series, (leading to the fan base to believe that all of the winners can), but the point is that Grian remembers 3rd Life.
He remembers the loving relationship he had with Scar, and how deeply they cared for each other.
You can see in his first reaction when he finds out he and Scar are soulmates. He doesnt want to be with Scar again, because what if it happens again? What if they are the last two, and Grian has to kill Scar again? Or even, Void forbid, Scar has to kill Grian?
That's why there's such a difference in their relationship in 3L and DL. Grian is terrified of getting close because of 3L. This causes misunderstandings and anger between them because Scar does not remember the past series', meaning all he knows is that Grian is acting cold and untrusting towards him for no explicable reason.
As the series' go on, Grian slowly grows around the fear of hurting scar, which we see in limited life and into Secret Life.
Grian doesn't really team up with Scar again, but he seems a lot more at ease then he was in DL, especially after Scar wins SL.
Because now, even if he doesn't fully remember 3rdL like Grian does, he isn't fully blind to it either.
Personally, I hc that when a player wins, they don't immediately gain the memories of the previous series', but they feel the emotions they felt, and over time gain full memories. For example, Scott was gaining memories of 3L in Double Life because he won Last life. 3L was the only one before he won, so it was the only one he needed to regain the memories for.
Basically the same thing happens with Scar, but it takes a while because while Scott only had one to catch up, Scar had four.
That's why they act so close in Wild Life. Scar finally has context for everything that happened in Double Life, as well as all the other seasons before Secret Life.
long post but yeah that's why I think Grian and Scar were so bad together in Double Life specifically, and how they eventually healed enough to be together in Wild life!
