Link to the AO3 collection So, when @fictionissocialinquiry laid out this challenge, it was mainly for writers; but she included some extra prompts therein, and one was a line from Hozier’s “Shrike”.

I couldn’t whisper when you needed it shouted This led me to listen to “Shrike” on repeat while I feverishly started doodling the thumbnails for the animatic I got in my head (so I hope that some of that emotion from Hozier’s amazing song comes through in the final board, ‘cause I listened to it. A. Lot.). While I think it’s a bit easier for drawings to express “I love you” without any words needed at all. I wanted to try and approach the task by thinking of ways one can confess that they love someone through acts of service and tenderness versus super obvious displays of love, I guess. It came out with a sort of courtly love-ish vibe that I really ended up liking. (Though I suppose reciprocation makes it not courtly love ANYWHO…)

I’m in an Ambassador Katara/Fire Lord Zuko state of mind! I just love any love story with them in these roles. There are so many different ways to play with the set up of them as Ambassador and Fire Lord. In this one, I kind of picture that they haven’t gotten together yet (this is divergent from whatever I did in the Reunion animatics; this is it’s own thing). Perhaps they are on the precipice of realizing they want to be together… I don’t know; it’s open to interpretation. XD but what I hope I portrayed clearly is how one can show that they love another. u.u

I have zutara brain rot tonight as I work on the next chapter of eia and all I’m thinking about is how Zuko had never felt special or important or worthy in his young life— his father literally burned into him the idea that he was worthless, that he was just “lucky to be born” and that he was nothing compared to his sister. and Katara really looked at him, with all the gentleness and earnestness in the world, and said “—it has special properties so I’ve been saving it for something important.”

Like no wonder Zuko just closed his eyes when she said that, at her touch. I wonder when was the last time someone told Zuko he was important.

Or worthy of something as miraculous and kind as healing.

Sunlight in the Southern Water Tribe

I kind of like the idea that Zuko and the ZK kids, especially Kya, really love staying in the Southern Water Tribe, particularly in the seasons where the sun hangs in the air all day into the night. Wouldn’t firebenders enjoy that? Must feel really nice n.n It’s funny; I saw a bunch of Zutara people posting Southern Water Tribe Zuko and Katara lately, and I’ve had this drawing on the backburner for a while and I was like… the hive mind! I love all the parallel thinking in this community; it’s so fun XD So I finally finished this with a real quick background after working on the character drawings for far too long. Is what it is. :| But really, thank you to all the Zutara peeps who have made this year bearable (you know who you are n.n); I’m really grateful to all the friends made this year and hope for better times for everyone in the future. Anyway, just some Southern Water Tribe Zutara with progeny for the winter season. Hope everyone is having safe and happy holidays! Please do not repost or use without permission. Thanks!

all I can think about lately is the fact that Katara’s character was made first, right? Then Zuko’s. He was a more last minute addition, right? And we know (despite bryke trying to lie) that they originally were supposed to end up together- which the writing for seasons 1 and 2 also suggest, truly. But then that means that there is a part of Zuko’s character that was crafted for Katara. Might be a little too meta but like— what a horrible fate for a character to be created with the idea of another in mind and not end up together. No wonder he searches for her in his relationship with Mai. No wonder he can’t stop thinking about her, trying to make amends with her. Some part of him was created with her in mind, tethering him to her for the rest of the narrative, no matter how hard the writers then tried to pull him from her.

#Zutara #I keep thinking about the way in crossroads of destiny #the moment Katara touched his scar #it was like some massive part of him was soothed #he just shut his eyes #she was supposed to be his enemy #no one had touched his scar #I think about again when he was finally accepted by the gaang #and how he saw Katara standing in that doorway #the way he immediately smiled before he understood she was upset #it’s the way he took that lightning for her #that was in his fate as a character #idk this is so meta and weird but I thought about it last night at 3am #I swear I’m working on the next chapter of everything I am #I just needed to get this out of my gremlin mind
